After an early elimination from the playoff race, Chennai Super Kings completed their season on a high with three wins on the trot. As they salvaged some pride by winning their final league game against Kings XI Punjab, they knocked the KL Rahul led side out of the qualification race. CSK registered an emphatic 9 wicket win to dash KXIP’s hopes as young Ruturaj Gaikwad smashed his third consecutive fifty of the season.

Despite the positives, the side gained towards the end of the season, CSK skipper MS Dhoni didn’t shy away from admitting the side’s wrongdoings this season. Dhoni is glad the way his side soaked the frustration of the disastrous season and kept their performances up. He adds that maintaining the dressing room atmosphere is very important when things get difficult in the middle.
“It was a difficult campaign for us. I don’t think we played to the full potential. We did commit a lot of errors at different points in the tournament,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
“The last four games, it could be a template as to where we would have liked to be. If you are lagging too much, it becomes very difficult to push yourself and come up with performances. That’s where each and everyone had to contribute. Very proud the way they played their cricket. It would have been very tough 6-7 games. You won’t want to be in a dressing room that is not really enjoying cricket. You want to keep coming up with different ideas but if the dressing room atmosphere is not happy, it becomes very tough,” he further said.
Time to hand it over to the next generation
The former Indian skipper shares that the franchise is looking to change the core as they prepare for the upcoming seasons. Dhoni adds that it’s time to hand over the side to the next generation as he looks to hand over responsibilities to a new, young core group for the next decade.
“A lot depends on what the BCCI decides upon the auction. We need to slightly change our core group and look for the next ten years. At the start of the IPL, we made a team and it served well. There comes a time where you have to shift a bit, hand it over to the next generation,” Dhon signed off.
