IPL 2021 Auction: 3 teams that might bid for Moeen Ali
moeen ali
The auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 is only days away. The mini-auction will see many big names going under the hammer. And one of them to look out for is that of Moeen Ali. Having been released by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the Englishman will be expecting to attract a good amount this season. Ali has registered himself with a base price of 2 crores.
In 34 T20 Internationals Ali has scored 392 runs at an average of 17.00 and strike rate of 134.7. He also boasts 17 wickets at an economy rate of 8.59. In the IPL, the all-rounder has amassed 309 runs at 20.6 and picking 10 wickets at an impressive economy of 7.13. It won’t be a surprise if more than one franchises bid for Ali. So today, we take a look at three teams who could go for Moeen Ali in the upcoming auction.
Kings XI Punjab
With the highest purse amount left, Kings XI Punjab will be eyeing some big names in the mini-auction. Having released the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and K Gowtham, KXIP will be looking for an all-rounder to fill in. And who better than the experienced Moeen Ali to add to their squad. Ali’s experience makes him the perfect candidate to pair up with Ravi Bishnoi in the spin department.
Over-dependence on the opening partnership of Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul was a big reason behind their horrid run in 2020. Ali’s inclusion will bolster the KXIP batting line up comprehensively. The Englishman’s ability to bat at any number will come in handy for the Kings given their fragile middle order. Ali can also don the role of a finisher if his side requires him having done so for RCB and his national side on numerous occasions.
Rajasthan Royals
A big reason behind Rajasthan Royals’ terrible run in IPL 2020 was their inconsistent batting lineup. While the top order failed to fire in the majority of the games, their middle-order lacked a genuine stroke player. Rahul Tewatia emerged as a key player but failed to deliver towards the back end due to a lack of support. Having released Tom Curran, the Royals will be looking for an able all-rounder. And who better than Moeen Ali for the job.
Time and time again, Ali has proved how good a batsman he is. He has the prowess to accelerate on will and it is something RR needs to succeed in the lead. Moreover, he can contribute with the ball and lend a supporting hand to Tewatia and Shreyas Gopal in the spin department. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Sanju Samson led franchise bids for Ali in the upcoming auction.
Chennai Super Kings
The three-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, are coming off a horrible season last year. IPL 2020 was the first time when the Super Kings failed to qualify for the playoffs in their 10-year history in the league. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, they finished at seventh position with 12 points. A big reason for that was the lack of a finisher in the side. Despite getting great starts, CSK failed to accelerate in the death overs.
Ali’s hitting prowess is something that could work wonders for the Super Kings. Having released Piyush Chawla and Harbhajan Singh, the franchise will be looking for an extra spinning option. And the Englishman can ticket that checkbox too. With DJ Bravo struggling lately, Ali could be a great replacement for the veteran. All in all, Ali is the package that could solve a number of problems for CSK.
