“It was time to ditch Kyrie Irving” Kevin Durant has enough of Nets drama as he finally requests a way out of misery

Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving parting ways?

Many of the questions surrounding the Nets during the 2022 NBA offseason were about the status of Kyrie Irving. But after settling all the fuss around the star guard, the Nets will have to deal with yet another high-profile deal including Kevin Durant. Brooklyn was never looking to move their prized asset so early in their collaborations, but many factors affected Kevin’s decision. So, n what is already the most chaotic day on the NBA calendar, Kevin Durant just upped the ante and sent the entire league into pandemonium. Irving quelled any concerns by saying that he could leave Kevin Durant alone in Brooklyn and will have another try for the championship. But now, it doesn’t look like he will have to worry about that anymore.

On Thursday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Durant was requesting a trade away from the Nets and Net’s general manager Sean Marks, is working to grant it as he is sorting the deal with Durant’s Agent. Sadly the trade will bring Durant’s three-year tenure with the Nets to a disappointing conclusion, but it can’t be totally blamed on ‘Slim reaper’, as he solely showed intent to make the stay workout for both the parties. Durant is said to have a list of teams he would like to join next season so that the Net’s front office would draw some deals around those involved.

Durant has played 15 seasons in the league, while he sat out 1 complete season at the Nets recovering from a torn Achilles back in 2019. He has averaged 27.2 points in his career – over that span, only LeBron James, at 27.3 points per game, has averaged more. The 12-time-All star certainly has shown his capabilities leading The Warriors to back-to-back NBA Titles but seemed less effective at Brooklyn Nets. Let us go through some of the aspects forcing Durant out of the Nets franchise.

Some important factors having negative effects on Kevin Durant at Brooklyn Nets

In 2019, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving joined hands to bring 1st ever NBA title to Brooklyn Nets. The presence of a dynamic duo was sufficient to make the team title favorites and the addition of James Harden in 2020 further cemented their position as “favorites” for the Championship. But in reality, Brooklyn won just one playoff series during KD’s tenure with the team. Though he didn’t play during the first season of his contract, the Durant-Irving pairing was supposed to bring glory to Brooklyn.

The hope was that Durant and Kyrie Irving would establish them as an explosive offensive pairing that can run down any team’s defenses at will. But they just played 58 of 247 total games together during their Nets careers – including playoff games. The so-called “big-3” at the Nets also had only 16 games together in a total of one and half seasons. A combination of injuries for the two, Harden’s sour relations in the franchise, and Irving’s refusal to take the COVID-19 vaccine limited how frequently they were on the floor together. That could have irked Kevin more than anything.

Interestingly, as per ESPN’s Wojnarowski reports, after Irving opted into his deal with the Nets, Durant had no contact with him. That showed there is no “bond” between the two superstars in the franchise, which could put them in a position to make a strong challenge for the NBA championship.

Also many might question Steve Nash’s ability to guide the franchise to the elusive NBA Trophy. Though he had his “big-3” playing just 16 games together, they had a 7-9 record. Also, a very recent clean sweep against the eventual finalist Boston Celtics highlighted shortfalls in the team, as Nash couldn’t utilize his assets effectively.

So, 2-time NBA Champion Kevin Durant taking his quest for more titles elsewhere couldn’t be questioned. At his age – Durant will turn 34 on 29 September; he is still one of the best players in the game, his 6ft 10in frame making his jump shot almost unstoppable by any defender.
