Despite opening the season with a 33-17 victory, the Dallas Cowboys haven’t been able to maintain the consistency that sunk them to a 2-2 standing. Fans’ frustrations from the team seem reasonable considering the team’s offseason inactivity and the collapse of last season’s Super Bowl hopes. But owner Jerry Jones seems to have some wise words for them.
As many analysts have highlighted, the Cowboys aren’t the team they were last season that brought them the NFC East title. Fans blame the defense for that for allowing the opponents to record 888 yards in both the losses in week 2 and 3, along with an average of 36 points per game.
Addressing the fans’ frustration during his recent appearance on 105.3 The Fan, the 81-year-old expressed his faith in the team to succeed in the playoffs to end the Super Bowl drought and urged the fans to focus on long-term success rather than getting upset over starting regular season losses.
In addition to the defense, the Cowboys’ running game has also been a subject of concern for the fans. Unlike last season, they rank last in yards per game with 75.3 and their run defense is ranked seventh-worst across the league.
Jerry Jones emphasizes long-term goals over rocky start for Cowboys
The Cowboys might be struggling at the season start, but owner Jones seems to see the bigger picture and asserted that many fans would prefer better playoff performance, even if it comes at the cost of a rocky and slow season start.
Unfortunately for the team, the upcoming scheduled games wouldn’t be easy as they are set to face strong contender teams such as Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers.
If the team didn’t maintain their consistency like week 4’s feat, they might have to compromise their playoff hopes quite early in the season.
