In Short
  • JJ McCarthy is under pressure to prove himself as the Vikings' future franchise quarterback.
  • The Vikings signed veteran Kyler Murray, creating competition for the starting QB position.
  • Fans have noted McCarthy's cold body language and awkwardness when discussing his relationship with Murray.

JJ McCarthy hasn’t done enough to convince the Minnesota Vikings front office that he’s the future face of the franchise. And that’s why the Vikings decided to sign veteran Kyler Murray.

The Vikings are keeping the QB1 battle between McCarthy and Murray open. But, given Murray’s CV, he’s clearly ahead of his younger colleague in the race. Still, the Vikings fans must wait until the end of the OTAs to get a definitive answer.

Both Kevin O’Connell and wide receiver Justin Jefferson agree that Murray’s presence will only help McCarthy grow as a player. But how does McCarthy feel about the former Heisman Trophy winner? JJ McCarthy said on Wednesday:

It’s just like two guys in a classroom. He sits on one side. I sit on the other side. And it’s the coaches’ responsibility to teach us and coach us.

Fans react to JJ McCarthy’s comments about Kyler Murray

Analysts have doubted McCarthy from the moment he was drafted in the first round by the Vikings in 2024. McCarthy’s first season ended very early after suffering a torn meniscus. He sat out his entire rookie year.

Sam Darnold took over as the starter, and the Vikings won 12 games. Despite the outcome, the Vikings declined the chance to sign Darnold to a long-term contract because their goal has always been to convert McCarthy into the franchise quarterback.

The Michigan alum went 6-4 in another season shortened by injuries. But that’s only half the truth. He struggled to get the offense running and fumbled many times, forcing O’Connell to bench him for veteran signal caller Carson Wentz and rookie Max Brosmer.

McCarthy completed just 57.6% (among the lowest) of his passes for 1632 yards, threw 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

With Murray becoming available in the offseason, the Vikings did not waste time and signed him to a one-year deal. Now that he’s in the building, McCarthy is at risk of losing his place as the starting quarterback. McCarthy said:

Look, the organization made a decision that they feel [like] is gonna improve the depth and quality of the room. They feel like they made that decision. All I’m thinking about is continuing the upward trajectory.

It’s a mature answer from a 23-year-old under immense pressure. However, fans on social media viewed the interview differently. Rather than focusing on the answer, they zeroed in on McCarthy’s facial expressions and on the tone of his voice.

Kyler Murray gives his honest opinion on JJ McCarthy3

Murray, a first overall draft pick, spent seven turbulent seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, which were riddled with injuries and inconsistent performances. But there’s a big belief that the Pro Bowler has all the tools to succeed at a better-run franchise. The Vikings are definitely among them. But this also means taking the job away from McCarthy.

Regardless, Murray spoke highly of McCarthy:

I know he’s a younger guy, so any way I can help him… Give him any knowledge that he needs. We’re both competitors. I know we both want what’s best for the team.

Murray has a 38-48-1 regular season record and a 0-1 record in the playoffs. Darnold did not boast a great CV before he joined the Vikings. Two years later, he’s a Super Bowl champion. So, there’s definitely hope for Murray.
