In Short
  • Justin Jefferson expresses a desire for a stable long-term quarterback for the Vikings.
  • The Vikings signed Kyler Murray to a one-year deal, adding competition for J.J. McCarthy.
  • Jefferson recorded his lowest stats in the NFL last season due to quarterback instability.

The Minnesota Vikings haven’t had a stable quarterback room ever since Kirk Cousins left, and Justin Jefferson hopes the search for the number one starter will soon come to an end. Sam Darnold started in 2024 and led the Vikings to the summit of the NFC North and a playoff appearance.

Afterward, Minnesota’s front office made a questionable decision. They declined to sign Darnold to a long-term contract. After Darnold left, the Vikings relied on the 2024 first-round pick, JJ McCarthy.

McCarthy started the season, but injuries and poor performances forced Kevin O’Connell to put veteran Carson Wentz in. The Super Bowl winner played through a shoulder injury before ending up on the IR.

O’Connell then turned to rookie Max Brosmer. For that reason, Jefferson recorded just 1048 yards and 2 touchdowns from 84 catches, his lowest numbers since entering the NFL.

McCarthy, Wentz, and Brosmer are returning in 2026. Moreover, the Vikings signed former first overall pick Kyler Murray from free agency.

Jefferson looked his best during his four years with Cousins, who is competing for the QB1 job in Vegas. Minnesota will hold its own QB competition between Murray and McCarthy. No matter who ends up starting this year, Jefferson would like to have a consistent QB1 throwing him passes for years to come.

That’s definitely something that is… I want that, for sure… Like me being with Kirk [Cousins] for those first four years of my [NFL] career, just building on that connection, [building on that relationship], that’s something that’s unbroken. That’s something that you just don’t find anywhere. So, it definitely would be great to have a quarterback—the same quarterback—for these next couple [of] years going down the line.

Justin Jefferson said during Friday’s segment of NFL Network’s Good Morning Football

The Vikings signed Murray to a one-year deal, with the Cardinals covering a significant portion of his salary. Jefferson believes Murray’s presence will motivate McCarthy to get better.

For JJ [McCarthy], for somebody [Kyler Murray] to enter that room with that type of ability, that type of talent, he’s [McCarthy] got to step it up a little bit. So, it’s good for him to feel that type of pressure.

Veteran sports contributor Skip Bayless noted that Murray joining the Vikings is a franchise-altering business. Murray, when healthy, lit up the league with both his arm and feet. The Oklahoma alum went 38-48-1 with the Cardinals and accumulated 153 total touchdowns and 60 interceptions.

Justin Jefferson weighs in on the strength of the Vikings’ 2026 NFL schedule

On Thursday, May 14, the NFL released the entire 2026 regular season schedule. The Vikings kick off the year by playing the Green Bay Packers before jetting off to the Windy City to play the Chicago Bears.

However, their toughest stretch of the season will be in weeks 8-11 when they go up against four playoff (2025) teams, with three of them being away from home. If the Vikings aim to play postseason football, then they need star players like Jefferson and Jordan Addison to play well.

Jefferson isn’t afraid of their opponents. In fact, he’s itching to take the corners head-on.

They definitely got a couple [of] corners that I’m going to face this year that I haven’t faced in previous years. So, I’m definitely looking forward to that… Yeah, match-ups are going to be talked about; The just the exciting moments and the exciting match-ups are always talked about. So, I’m looking forward to it, as always.
