The fact that Novak Djokovic lost to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the Majors last year only shows that, at the moment, the two players are stopping the Serb from reaching another Grand Slam title. Apart from Sinner and Alcaraz, fitness problems are also hindering Djokovic from producing his best.

Even though Djokovic has reached the twilight of his career, it’s difficult to write him off in Grand Slam events because the tennis world knows that when he is highly motivated, he can pull off miracles, even at a later stage of his career.

In 2024, Djokovic clinched his career’s first gold medal by defeating Alcaraz at the Paris Olympics after a hard-fought battle. Former World No.5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also thinks that despite the Sinner-Alcaraz obstacle, Djokovic is forever ready to capitalize on chances to win his historic 25th Grand Slam title.

When you hear (Djokovic) talk about Carlos and Jannik today, putting them on another level, you sometimes get the impression that he’s already given up. But I think he’s still ready. He continues to play very good tennis. And if there’s even an inch of opening, he’ll take it. You can feel that every time he steps onto the court, he’s pushing the boundaries even further. It will be fascinating to follow him this year.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga told Blick Magazine

Last year, during the Australian Open semifinal against Alexander Zverev, Djokovic threw in the towel after losing the first set due to a hamstring injury. Then Sinner beat him in the semifinals of the French Open and Wimbledon in straight sets. Alcaraz got his Australian Open defeat revenge by beating him in the US Open final.

Renzo Furlan on how Novak Djokovic can win another Grand Slam title

For Novak Djokovic to add one more Major to his title tally, something has to happen to Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, believes Jasmine Paolini‘s former coach, Renzo Furlan. The Spaniard has often suffered from a lapse in concentration during matches, as a consequence of which he has lost in early rounds.

Sinner sometimes struggles due to physical problems, especially when there is extreme heat. He took an 11-minute medical timeout during the fourth round of the Australian Open against Holger Rune last year. Then at the Cincinnati Masters and the Shanghai Masters, he handed the walkover to Alcaraz in the final and Tallon Griekspoor in the third round, respectively.

He (Djokovic) can do it, but something strange has to happen: Alcaraz has to have a bad day in the early rounds, or Sinner has to suffer a physical problem like in Shanghai. Of course, if he runs into both of them in the semifinals or the final, even he knows it’s almost impossible.

Djokovic finished the 2025 season with two ATP 250 titles, which he won at the Geneva Open and the Hellenic Championship by defeating Hubert Hurkacz and Lorenzo Musetti, respectively. Djokovic also reached the final of the Miami Open, where Jakub Mensik denied him his career’s 41st Masters 1000 title.

Sinner and Alcaraz won six and eight titles, respectively, in 2025. The World No.1 and the World No.2, in fact, won the last eight Grand Slam titles, with Djokovic being the last player not named Alcaraz or Sinner to clinch a Major (at the 2023 US Open). Since then, the seven-time Wimbledon champion made it to just one Major final, at Wimbledon in 2024, losing the match to Alcaraz in straight sets.

At the Australian Open, Djokovic will be chasing his 11th title. Sinner will be eyeing a three-peat, while Alcaraz’s goal will be to complete the Career Grand Slam.
