Backlash 2026 witnessed John Cena‘s second WWE appearance of the year, and this one had a ton of pressure to live up to its billing. ‘The Cenation Leader’ had promoted it as something that’d shake the very foundation of WWE from its fans to superstars and from its champions to even the rookies. Did Cena actually deliver on his history-making announcement?

Rocking a suit, the 17-time world champion unveiled the John Cena classic. It’d be an annual event featuring wrestlers both from the main roster and NXT going up against one another in the hope of becoming a champion. Since he was putting his name on this event and the brand-new championship, Cena said he’d strive for a certain level of excellence.

Calling the audience the biggest superstar in WWE, the Peacemaker star revealed that the fans will vote to crown the champion of the John Cena classic. And for the first time in history, even if a certain superstar loses their match, they could still become a champion should they earn the respect of the fans through their hustle.

‘The Franchise Player’ stressed that this concept embodies everything he’s stood for in the WWE. John Cena added that he wants to give it everything he has and would like to keep the tradition going for as long as it may. Before letting the cat out of the bag, the 49-year-old briefly touched on his last match in WWE.

The Ricky Stanicky actor said he knew some fans were upset over the result, but he was truly happy with how everything went. Cena asserted that he wanted his last match opponent to earn his spot, which Gunther did by winning the Last Time is Now tournament.

On top of that, ‘The Prototype’ wanted to share the spotlight with the up-and-coming stars of NXT. Names like Oba Femi, Je’Von Evans, and Sol Ruca were featured on that card for Cena’s final match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December. Also, contrary to the rumors, the aforementioned announcement had nothing to do with the concept of Club WWE.

Trick Williams and Bron Breakker put away veterans in their respective matches at Backlash

Having lost his WrestleMania match to Gunther due to an ambush by Bron Breakker, Seth Rollins took on his former Vision protege at Backlash on Saturday night in Tampa. They had the longest match of the evening, and it certainly delivered the goods. Rollins also had to thwart the duo of Austin Theory and Logan Paul by shooing them off with steel chair shots to their backs.

Just as Rollins re-entered the ring, he got speared by Breakker but kicked out. ‘The Visionary’ countered Breakker charging at him for a spear with a pedigree. He then perched on the top rope to attempt an Avalanche Curb Stomp on ‘The Unpredictable Badass’. However, the latter cut Rollins in half with a spear. The second-generation Steiner then finished off the veteran with a torpedo spear off the ropes to win.

That was quite an opening match to WWE Backlash. It was followed by Trick Williams defending his United States Championship against Sami Zayn. Lil Yachty played a factor in this match, and he got his payback on Zayn by hitting him with the kendo stick while the former ‘Honorary Uce’ was measuring Williams for a Helluva Kick.

The champ hit the Cyclone Boot on Zayn for a near fall. Zayn snapped at Yachty at ringside and started unloading on him to vent his frustration. ‘Trick Willy’ tried catching his opponent with the Book End on the steel steps, but Zayn countered it with a DDT. The erstwhile El Generico eventually laid Little Yachty out with a Helluva Kick to the back of his head near the barricade.

In the closing moments, ‘Mr. Whoop That’ got out of harm’s way when Zayn went for the Helluva Kick and nailed the Trick Shot on Zayn to retain the US title. Things went from bad to worse for Zayn at Backlash. Just a night ago on SmackDown, Zayn had to put up with the funeral of the Gingerbread Man, and now he’s lost the US title match to add to his woes.
