Justin Thomas had to work hard to secure his weekend status. In the second round of the Memorial Tournament, the 2-time major champion made the cut on the final hole. Following this, he got real about his performance and expressed that this was the most difficult round of his career.

This week, the PGA Tour is playing at Muirfield Village. The tournament, hosted by 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus, has proved to be tough for several players.

In the first round, Thomas carded 6 bogeys and 4 birdies with 3 bogeys and 3 birdies coming on the front nine. He wrapped up the first round with a 2-over score.

On Friday, it seemed he would miss the cut with 3 bogeys on the front nine once again. After a birdie on the 15th hole, he made another bogey on the 17th hole. This left him in trouble.

The golfer needed to make a par on the par-4 18th hole to keep him alive in the tournament. An impressive flop shot from behind the 18th green was followed by a close-range putt. He finished the round with a 3-over score and made the cut on the 5-over cutline.

That was the hardest round of golf that I can remember – major, non-major, it was just insane.

Justin Thomas told the reporters

The former World No.1 later took to his X account to make his feelings known. While lauding the 36-hole leader J.T. Poston, he admitted that this was the most difficult round of his career on the PGA Tour.

I don’t think I can put into words how good @JT_ThePostman round was today… I’m out there trying to figure out where and how I can make ONE birdie, let alone shooting -7! Today was probably the most difficult round I’ve played on tour. On to the weekend!

Poston made 6 birdies on the front nine and was 5-under par for the day after 9 holes. On the back nine, he made 2 more birdies and wrapped up the round with a 7-under par score.

The 3-time PGA Tour winner has a 1-shot lead over Ryan Gerard, who is second in the standings with an 8-under par score. The two of them will tee off as the final pair in the third round.

Speaking of the third round on Saturday, Thomas is all alone. As per the tee times revealed by the PGA Tour Communications, the golfer will not have a partner on moving day due to 53 players making the cut and him being the last one to do so. He will tee off at 8:50 a.m. (local time) and get the round underway.

After missing the cut in his first event of the year at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, he has now made the cut in all of his 9 starts. So far, he has 2 top-10 finishes this year.

Justin Thomas shared a hug with Rory McIlroy after making the cut

Justin Thomas just squeezed past the cut line at the Memorial Tournament with a par on the final hole. After making the cut and ensuring his place in the field for the weekend, he would share a hug with his playing partner, Rory McIlroy.

The two major champions were paired together for this event. After a 1-under par score in the first round, McIlroy also stumbled a bit in Round 2.

The reigning Masters champion carded a round of 74 on Friday. This saw him drop down 6 places in the leaderboard and finish the day in T19. Meanwhile, Thomas converted a pressure putt from close range to make the cut on the dot.

Usually, after a round in golf, the players shake hands. However, this time, the two golfers shared a hug, probably due to the relief of safely making it through to the next round.

While Thomas will play alone on Saturday, McIlroy has been paired with Gary Woodland for the third round. They will be hoping for a much better round than this as they gear up for the U.S. Open later this month.
