On Thursday, Scottie Scheffler found himself in hot water after having a rare meltdown. The World No.1 unloaded on his caddie, Ted Scott, after his shot on the 16th hole at the Memorial Tournament found the water.

This week, Scheffler entered the Muirfield Village Golf Club as the 2-time defending champion. The American international had won this event in 2024 and 2025 and thus started this week of completing a three-peat at Jack Nicklaus’ place.

Things were going well for him. He carded a score of 2-under 34 on the front nine. It was the back nine where he started slipping.

After bogeying the 10th hole, he found the greenside bunker on the 14th hole. After a par on the 15th hole, he took a 7-iron on the par-3 16th hole. Scheffler ended up finding the water as his ball bounced off the green into the pond.

The golfer thought he had hit a clean shot. With his ball in the water, he unloaded on his caddie, Ted Scott. He was clearly upset with what happened and vented out his frustrations on his looper.

I never thought that I was in the water. I don’t know what to do. I can’t hear a word you’re saying. I feel like that was a good shot. Now I’m in the water. Because it came in out of the right. Absolutely flushed a 7-iron and we get the wind wrong, and I end up in the water. I don’t think you understand how frustrating that is.

Scheffler ended with a double bogey on this hole. He then fired a birdie on the 17th hole and made par on the 18th hole to finish the day 1-over par. This was the first round of over-par score since the Genesis Invitational in February.

Users on X were not happy to see him unload on Scott after a shot he played. Many criticized him for this and called him out. One user wrote, “Stop being so entitled“, while pointing out that he (Scheffler) played a bad shot.

Scheffler’s emotions have gotten the better of him this season. A few times, he has shut down reporters in the press conference after his rounds.

At the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, he tossed his ball into the pond after missing a close-range putt on the 18th hole in the 2nd round. All of this has led to many fans slamming him.

Scottie Scheffler commented on his meltdown after first round

Sometimes even the best can lose their calm. Scottie Scheffler, who is regarded by many as the best golfer on this planet at the moment, had a moment to forget after his shot landed in the water. Following the round, the 4-time major champion commented on his meltdown.

In the press conference, he simply claimed that it was frustrating to see the ball land in the water after making a clean contact.

That’s just another really good iron shot, and the wind switched from down off the right to pretty significantly in off the right. If it’s down off the right, that ball’s probably where I hit my wedge shot to. So just don’t really know what I’m supposed to do there outside of trying to hit a good shot, and then it’s frustrating when it doesn’t work out, especially when it doesn’t work out in that direction.

Scottie Scheffler told the reporters

The defending Memorial Tournament champion is 7 shots behind co-leaders Wyndham Clark, J.J Spaun, Tommy Fleetwood, and Ryan Gerard, who all shot 5-under par. It will take a huge effort from him if he were to complete the three-peat.
