Klay Thompson could possibly leave the Golden State Warriors after unfollowing team's Instagram account

Klay Thompson is a free agent for the 1st time in his career. He has never had to deal with this situation in his 13 years with the Golden State Warriors. The now 34-year-old wants to stay after bringing the franchise 4 NBA titles in 9 years. However, it seems discussions have become stale as the superstar unfollowed the team’s Instagram account. It might suggest his time with Stephen Curry is over.

The former 1st round draft pick was a reliable elite 3-and-D player. All these skills helped the team become the best NBA Franchise for the past decade. Fast forward to today, and the situation is different. Klay Thompson is demanding a big salary. It is something the salary-cap-strapped Warriors seem unwilling to do. As such, Thompson went to the extent of unfollowing the team’s Instagram account.

If anything, this could signal that the team will not forget that his no-show in the play-in-game cost them a chance to advance in the playoffs. They have also not forgotten his bad play this year. That prompted head coach Steve Kerr to demote him to the bench.

Nevertheless, Thompson rebounded and played much better since then. Ultimately, it was not enough to warrant a new contract. The Golden State Warriors are in flux. They want to improve their team, but the NBA hard cap does not allow them the wriggle room they previously exploited.

Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry transformed the NBA

Stephen Curry was seen as a high-scoring point guard when he burst into the NBA. However, his MVP-level play was unlocked when Steve Kerr changed the way he and Thompson played the guard spots. By making Draymond Green the primary playmaker, the offensive scheme allowed both Curry and Thompson to score at will.

This method of play transformed the NBA from being dependent on big men to playing small ball. It is a scheme that every team has since deployed in the league. It also brought forward the concept of positionless basketball. Curry and Klay Thompson went on to amass 4 NBA titles, 15 All-Star appearances, and 12 All-NBA selections.

With Thompson’s latest move, it seems the greatest backcourt in NBA history, famously known as the Splash Brothers, is most likely over. But the 2024-25 NBA season has some time to go before the 1st whistle. As such, maybe the Splash Brothers will continue until the end.
