Kristoffer Ajer closing in to join Brentford from Celtic
Center-back Kristoffer Ajer is close to joining Premier League newbies Brentford from Celtic. Ajer is expected to leave Celtic during the current transfer window, with the Bhoys receiving a price of about £13.5 million.
Celtic have had the center-back since 2016 and he has been a regular ever since. Ajer, however, told Celtic earlier this year that he wanted to leave Parkhead. Celtic are pushing in on a deal for Carl Starfelt, who may now fill Ajer’s place.
The Norwegian is in the final year of his contract and has suggested that it would be in everyone’s best interests if he left for a fee this season.
Ajer was pursued by teams from Italy and Germany, but he notified his managers early on that he wants to compete in the Premier League. Leicester City had approached Celtic about Ajer before opting on the Frenchman Wesley Fofana.
Brentford beat off stiff competition to sign the center-back, with Norwich, Brighton, and Newcastle all expressing interest in the youngster. Brentford have now agreed to a signing of around £13.5 million for Ajer.
Ajer has excelled for Celtic and will now be aiming to deliver for Brentford in the Premier League. The Norwegian will now undergo a medical examination in west London before becoming the club’s record transfer.
Kristoffer Ajer’s performance for Celtic
Kristoffer Ajer joined Celtic in 2016 after playing with Start for two years. Ajer has been brilliant for the club since his arrival and had become a mainstay for them.
The center-back has appeared in 170 games for Celtic and has also netted six goals in the process. Ajer has been an integral part of the Celtic squad which won the Scottish Premiership ( 2017-18, 2018-19, 2109-20), Scottish Cup ( 2017-18, 2018-19, 2109-20), and Scottish League Cup (2017-18, 2018-19, 2109-20).
The Norwegian was also included in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year for the 2018-19 Scottish Premiership season.
