- Brock Purdy received a 4th-round grade from Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch before the 2022 draft.
- Shanahan emphasized the importance of winning the Super Bowl as the team's primary goal.
- Kyle Shanahan expressed frustration over the 49ers' game against the Rams being held in Australia, impacting fan support.
After all their health troubles from the last two seasons, San Francisco 49ers fans will be hoping that this year, Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and the retooled defense can help Kyle Shanahan guide them to Super Bowl LXI.
Injuries to Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, and George Kittle were major. But the quarterback and other players also suffered niggling injuries that kept them from reaching their potential.
Kittle might be late to suit up for this upcoming season. But there is hope that until he does, the team can do what is necessary to stay in the fight in the tough NFC West.
However, there are still many who do not think the part-time farmer Purdy is elite enough to lead them to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy. But if Shanahan and the organization believe he can, then those criticisms may not matter.
He was one of our favorite QBs in that draft… We gave him a 4th-round draft pick… That night in bed, that might’ve been the first time where I was like ‘We might have something special’, because I was so sick because I thought we had such a good team and Trey Lance was already on IR and Jimmy Garoppolo just broke his ankle.
Kyle Shanahan told Tom Tolbert
In the first part of his answer, the 49ers head coach revealed just how highly he and GM John Lynch thought of Brock Purdy.

Then, in the second half of his answer, the offensive wizard revealed how the signal caller surprised them and the team with his abilities. That is when they were sure their pre-draft scouting of the 2023 Pro Bowler was on point.
Kyle Shanahan locked in on winning the Super Bowl
After talking about Brock Purdy, host Tom Tolbert gave Kyle Shanahan a scenario. Over a 10-season span, win one Super Bowl and appear in the playoffs one more time.

The second scenario is that they will never win a Super Bowl in that stretch, but will probably lose two and be a regular playoff contender every season.
Since you said 1 scenario was having a Super Bowl, I haven’t heard one word since you said since. So that’s how we think, that’s how we live our life.
Kyle Shanahan replied
The 46-year-old believes that everyone involved with the NFL or any other competitive sport wants to win a championship. That is their No. 1 goal, and that is how they build their life to compete for it.
Kyle Shanahan was asked if he could pick between winning 1 Super Bowl and only making the playoffs 1 other time in the next 9 seasons or being competitive and making deep playoff runs for 10 seasons, which would he pick:

However, Shanahan agreed that after wearing one ring, having eight years of no playoff football is a disastrous scenario. No one in their right mind would want that, as the legacy of that Super Bowl gets lost.
The Minnesota native prefers that the 49ers are competitive every year, but winning the Super Bowl is their priority, and they will do everything needed to get there.
Kyle Shanahan not happy with Australia game vs Rams
In their quest to win Super Bowl LXI, Kyle Shanahan has to lead his 49ers to wins over their division rivals if they are to end up with a first-round bye.
To start that quest, they will face the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on September 10th. When Tom Tolbert asked whether that upset him, or the fact that their NFC West rivals wanted that game, the coach replied:
Both, but more of that than the other. We only get 3 close fights, whether it’s Seattle, Arizona, or LA. So to get one of those taken away is tough… Especially when it’s 19 hours away on an airplane… So that adds up, and I love our fans taking over SoFi. That’s awesome, and I get why the Rams don’t want that.
Kyle Shanahan replied
He was essentially suggesting that the Rams intentionally lobbied the league to go ahead with this game to avoid 49ers fans from dominating SoFi Stadium, as they have done in the past.
Kyle Shanahan was asked if it was the fact they had to go to Australia for Week 1 or that it was the Rams who asked the league to play the 49ers, that he wasn’t happy about:

Taking away that support is crucial in divisional rivalries, and the Rams have not enjoyed it in the past. But Shanahan is also miffed that the game is that far away, which takes a toll on everyone.
