In Short
  • Leonard Fournette criticized Rashee Rice for his off-field issues, suggesting he needs to get his act together.
  • Rice recently served 30 days in jail for violating probation after testing positive for THC.
  • Fournette warned that the Chiefs may not tolerate Rice's behavior much longer, risking his future with the team.

Rashee Rice’s potential is so massive that his off-field activities frustrate not only the Kansas City Chiefs but even former players like Leonard Fournette. The retired running back wants Rice to get his act together and act like a responsible adult.

The reason Fournette is angry with Rice is due to the irresponsible actions that landed him in jail for 30 days right before the Chiefs’ OTAs.

I can fight, Mr. Rice. So, if I got to punch on you to get your mind right, coz that seems like what he needs right now.

Leonard Fournette said on his 4th and South podcast with former wide receiver Jarvis Landry

Why is Rashee Rice in jail?

Rice won a Super Bowl in his rookie season as the WR2 for the Chiefs. The issues started in year two. Before the season began, Rice was involved in a hit-and-run case that cost him playing time after he turned himself in to the authorities.

Rice got a pardon from the Chiefs organization and stepped onto the field midway through last year, but suffered an LCL injury. The NFL suspended the SMU alum for the start of the 2025 campaign. He only played 8 games before a concussion put him out for the rest of the year.

Just when Chiefs fans thought Rice couldn’t get into more trouble, he ended up inside a Dallas jail after testing positive for THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol/cannabis), violating his probation.

Rice only has one year remaining on his contract. Aside from showing glimpses of his prowess as a receiver, he hasn’t given the Chiefs reason to lock him down to a long-term contract. It’s a well-known fact that NFL franchises aren’t fond of troublemakers and have a history of pulling the plug on such players without a moment’s notice.

They [the Chiefs] only gonna tolerate you for so long. Who the hell [are] you hanging around? Your [expletive] needs to be with Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes 24/7. You have the guys that got the damn blueprint, and you just [expletive] it off.

Fournette said

Rice’s arrest has placed the Chiefs in a precarious position. He’s the best non-Patrick Mahomes player in the offense. And if he continues to create trouble for the club, then he could be released.

Analyst suggests how the Chiefs can handle the Rashee Rice situation

Rice has made 28 appearances since the Chiefs drafted him in the second round of the 2023 draft. In those games, he has accumulated 156 catches for 1797 yards and 14 touchdowns. However, nearly 1000 of those yards came during his rookie year.

So, the talent is there, and with Mahomes as his quarterback, Rice can reach newer heights. However, that depends on whether he can keep his nose out of trouble.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated suggested that the Chiefs should follow the same route as the Dallas Cowboys took to handle George Pickens’ situation.

I think they probably handle him like Dallas handled George Pickens—let’s tag him and let’s see.

Breer said via 98.5 The Sports Hub

But is Rice really on the same level as Pickens? Sure, he has had his fair share of troubles outside of the gridiron, but none of them involve run-ins with the law. And if CeeDee Lamb did not play for the Cowboys, Jerry Jones would have definitely signed Pickens to a long-term contract. Can the Chiefs really count on Rice to produce similar numbers to Pickens? For that to happen, he needs to play a full season without holding out like Tee Higgins.
