With the plethora of teams rumored to be in the hunt for free agent superstar LeBron James, Pat Riley threw up the possibility of his former player returning to the Miami Heat when he hinted that they have ‘another plane to land.’
Instantly, social media went into a frenzy, connecting the dots on what ‘The Godfather’ said. Even mainstream media could not avoid talking about the possibility that the plane Riley was referring to was for James.
It could have meant another major trade, as Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul remarked when the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade first came to light. But considering that the only free agent everyone is talking about, the belief was that James was indeed going back to South Beach.
However, some have questioned whether James can survive there with their past differences over chocolate chip cookies and other things. On that note, Brian Windhorst said this on NBA Today.
Pat Riley, over the decades, has been able to have second acts with all these great players… Pat Riley knows how to bring guys back. While there was disappointment when he left in 2014, there’s never been the animosity that existed in other places LeBron left.
Brian Windhorst said
Windy gave examples of Alonzo Mourning, Shaquille O’Neal, and Dwyane Wade, of how star players left due to differences, but returned to end their careers or had their jerseys retired.

Therefore, he does not believe now that LeBron James and Pat Riley hugged it out during the latter’s Lakers statue unveiling, that there is any beef between them. That should pave the way for the King to return to the Heat.
LeBron James has the best situation with the Heat
After Brian Windhorst explained how Pat Riley has generally mended relationships and brought back franchise legends, he then moved on to why the Miami Heat makes sense for LeBron James basketball-wise.

Cleveland may end up being the winning case, Philadelphia certainly. But Miami has a pathway, especially with LeBron saying he’s looking at the idea of multiple years. Multiple years have been the formula for him. He’s won a championship in the 2nd year everywhere he’s switched teams. I think Miami would be at their best a year from now and LeBron can be apart of that.
Brian Windhorst said
The ESPN senior writer pointed out that the Cavaliers have a complete, if not deep, roster. That could create problems for the four-time champion, as he loves to have the ball in his hands.
The 76ers may have a strong case to win the race to sign him, but they have similar problems with too many ball-dominant players on their roster. On that note, Windhorst singled out the Heat as the one team where there would be no overlap.
If LeBron James handles the playmaking, he can dictate and bring the best out of the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, and the others. Therefore, the basketball aspect could end up favoring the Heat.
Insider believes Heat have strong chance of landing LeBron James
Amidst all the rumors of the Miami Heat being a strong candidate to sign LeBron James, there are some who believe that the other teams still have a chance to nab him. However, ESPN insider Dave McMenamin believes that the superstar forward will head East.
If we are going to put them as the front runners, Miami and Cleveland. He’s won championships there. He’s familiar with the fans, the people, and the organization. Both teams have really strong rosters… If you’re going to look at any of the teams we’re talking about, who has the best current player of the realistic options he might team up with? You might say Giannis Antetokounmpo.

He reiterated that the other teams might be having strong rosters, but the East, and particularly the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Heat, are the two teams leading the race for the four-time league MVP‘s signature.
