L’Jarius Sneed has spoken out for the first time since signing with the Kansas City Chiefs. Sneed could play a bigger role in the Chiefs’ defense.
Sneed is well acquainted with the Chiefs. The AFC West franchise drafted Sneed in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft. He played four seasons with KC before the Chiefs traded him to the Tennessee Titans ahead of the 2024 season.
Sneed spent two years in Music City before returning to the Chiefs. Unlike last time, when Sneed was still finding his feet in the NFL, his role on the roster will be bigger.
Sneed spoke with KTAL in Louisiana from his youth camp. During the interview, the 29-year-old announced that he plans to regain some of the identity he feels was stripped away by injuries during his time in Tennessee.
Sneed said
Reclaim who I am. Not to prove anything but to show people I am who I was.
In March 2024, the Chiefs placed a franchise tag on Sneed. A couple of weeks later, the Chiefs traded Sneed and a seventh-round pick to the Titans in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and a 2024 seventh-round pick. Sneed signed a four-year, $76.40 million contract, including a $51.50 million guaranteed contract extension with the Titans.
However, Sneed battled multiple injuries in Tennessee. In his debut season, Sneed suffered a quadriceps injury after taking a direct hit to his leg from a player’s helmet. The Titans placed him on the IR, and his season ended after just 5 starts.
Sneed’s misery continued in the offseason. The Titans placed him on the PUP list (Physically Unable to Perform). The Titans released him in mid-October. Sneed played just 12 games for the Titans, recorded 59 tackles, and three passes defensed.
L’Jarius Sneed spoke about his new role with the Chiefs
In June 2025, the Chiefs re-signed Sneed. He penned a one-year, $5 million extension.

A lot has changed since Sneed was in the building. Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson have left the building. The Chiefs replaced them with young blood Mansoor Delane and Jadon Canady.
As the veteran in the locker room, Sneed will not shy away from mentoring the new generation.
Just instill in the younger guys, I think that’s my role now. Show them guys the way because I got two rings and I think we can go back and get another one.

Even though Sneed was away from KC for a couple of years, he should not find it too hard to integrate himself into the defense. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo still runs the show, and there’s no shortage of familiar faces, including Chris Jones and Drue Tranquill.
Reporters asked Chiefs head coach Andy Reid about Sneed’s impact on the team.
I’m a big L’Jarius fan … he’s a good football player. He says he feels healthy. He kinda went through some things in Tennessee, health wise, and I think he’s in a good place there.

Analyst predicts how the Chiefs could get the best out of L’Jarius Sneed
Sports Illustrated’s Joshua Brisco sees Sneed playing as the slot corner in Spagnuolo’s defense. Brisco noted that Sneed was among the best corners in football when healthy.
I’m a bit skeptical of the idea that Sneed and his persistent knee issues are still a good fit for a slot corner role, but he has played more snaps for [Steve] Spagnuolo than the rest of Kansas City’s cornerbacks combined. This could be the beginning of a new act of Sneed’s career, depending on how Spagnuolo chooses to use him. Of course, he has to begin by staying healthy.
Brisco wrote
Sneed has played 69 games since his debut. He has accumulated 352 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 4 forced fumbles, and 43 passes defensed.
