- Luka Doncic clarified that his trip to Spain was for Platelet-rich plasma injections, not to spend time with his daughters.
- He emphasized the need for multiple injections, requiring him to stay longer than expected.
- Doncic's return to play remains uncertain, with ongoing treatment and no set timeline for his comeback.
With LeBron James and his Los Angeles Lakers struggling to match the Oklahoma City Thunder in points scored, all eyes turned towards Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic.
The latter has been out for more than a month after suffering a Grade 2 hamstring injury against the same team in their second-last clash in the postseason.
After that game, the Lakers gave him permission to seek a second expert opinion in Europe. Usually, athletes go to Germany when it comes to soft-tissue injuries.
But the Slovenian went to Spain. That surprised many, and even led some to claim that the Lakers knew their most important superstar was nowhere close to returning this season.
Instead, they gave him time off to visit his two daughters, as he had not had enough time when his second was born. Now, when reporters caught up with Luka Doncic, that was the first question they asked.
I went to Spain to do PRP. Everybody knows that they’re just one of the best countries to do that… I know and trust lots of people from Spain… Why I was in Spain so long is because I needed four days in between every shot. So I did it four times. So that’s why I stayed longer.
Luka Doncic replied
This essentially debunks rumors that the Lakers had effectively given up on him this season and gave him time off to be with his family. His ex-fiancée had kept his daughters away after separating from him.

But now it seems he was getting Platelet-rich plasma injections in Spain, and the duration between injections is what kept him there.
Luka Doncic’s return is on a day-by-day basis
After he detailed how he had to stay in Spain for his Platelet-rich plasma injections, another reporter asked if he is on track to return earlier than expected.
I’m just doing everything I can, like I said, every day I’m doing stuff I’m supposed to do… The doctors said 8 weeks at the beginning of the 1st MRI. So I’m just going day by day, and I feel better every day.
Luka Doncic replied
It seems he is not giving an exact timeline as his treatment is still ongoing. He might not be getting Platelet-rich plasma injections anymore, but Lakers’ doctors are still treating him at their facilities.
The 27-year-old faced some scathing criticism from WWE legend Ric Flair after the Lakers’ offensive struggles led to their loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1.
Luka Doncic's response when asked whether he'll try to ramp up his return-to-play process for when Lakers-Thunder shifts back to L.A.: "I'm just doing everything I can, like I said, every day I'm doing stuff I'm supposed to do. It seems there is no true date by which he can return. If the treatment goes well, he could. But it takes time for a player to get back into rhythm. The last thing he or the franchise would want is to court criticism, just as Austin Reaves received for underperforming.
Lakers would be risking Luka Doncic’s health if he were pushed to return earlier
From whatever is deduced from Luka Doncic’s replies, it is clear that he is nowhere close to returning to the court. It takes a few games to hit peak form, and by then, the Lakers might be very close to losing the second-round playoff series.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are difficult to beat unless a team such as that wearing purple and gold plays ‘perfect basketball.’ That means they would also need the five-time All-NBA first-teamer to be at his best.
If the franchise pushes Doncic to return earlier than expected, he would be under pressure to get back into rhythm fast. That will also bring along a great risk to his health.
The last thing the Lakers want is to affect his long-term health. They know they need him for the long run if they are to contend for championships.
