In Short
  • Justin Herbert stars in Madison Beer's music video for her single 'lovergirl,' part of her deluxe album edition.
  • The video features romantic montages of the couple and has gained over 300,000 views within 24 hours.
  • Dave Portnoy criticized Herbert's involvement in the music video, suggesting it distracts from his football performance.

From Brock Purdy making his daughter laugh with silliness to Jaxson Dart, Joe Burrow, and Cooper DeJean out on romantic strolls and events with their new beaus, the offseason is giving some wholesome moments. In the long list of such events, Los Angeles Chargers signal-caller Justin Herbert turned to a loverboy for his singer-girlfriend Madison Beer’s latest single, ‘lovergirl.’

The ‘lovergirl‘ is a part of the four new tracks released as a deluxe edition of her third and latest album, ‘Locket.’ The album dropped in early January, almost a year after the first single, ‘Make You Mine‘ was released. In addition to ‘Make You Mine,’ the album featured several hits like ‘Yes Baby,’ ‘Bittersweet,’ and ‘Bad Enough.’

In the deluxe version, there are three other brand new tracks, ‘somehow i got lucky,’ ‘free,’ and ‘Locket theme (extended).’ The music video was released as part of the deluxe edition, dropping right before her tour. The song, described as a dreamy and nostalgic pop song, featured Beer and Herbert. And no, it wasn’t a cameo; Herbert was the star of the show.

In the 3:21-minute-long video set on a 90s rom-com backdrop with dreamy editing, the couple is captured in their element. The montages included clips of the pair canoodling, kissing, and enjoying each other’s company. True to the theme of the album, Herbert wore a necklace with a locket inscribed with the letter ‘M.’

Indubitably, the video has since gone viral with more than 300,000 views on YouTube in 24 hours of release. The drop aligns perfectly with her fourth concert tour, starting just two days later with the first show in the Polish city of Kraków. The show comprises 32 shows with a European leg and then returning for several venues in her home country and Canada.

The show concludes with a New York show on July 13 at Madison Square Garden. It’s not confirmed whether Herbert will attend her shows, but it is highly likely that he will be flying with her in some events. Though the music video garnered attention, Herbert’s presence played a huge role in its instant virality, the quarterback has faced some backlash since it was dropped.

Dave Portnoy chides Justin Herbert for his music video appearance

The 49-year-old Barstool Sports founder, Dave Portnoy, has taken it to X in light of Justin Herbert‘s appearance in the ‘lovergirl.’ And he had some words to say about it.

Portnoy claimed that the athlete focusing on an off-the-field activity, like “making a steamy music video“, isn’t ideal. Portnoy, a New England Patriots fan, took a shot at Herbert and the Chargers’ playoff record and attributed that behavior, such as this, to maybe the reason why they have a deep playoff run. He wrote:

Call me crazy but I like my coaches and QB’s concentrating on the weight room and studying game tape rather than making steamy music videos…But maybe that’s why we have 6 rings and were in the Super Bowl last year and the Chargers can’t win a playoff game.

The quarterback’s playoff record has been a contentious one in discussions about him. Herbert consistently leads the regular season in different quarterback metrics, but when it comes to taking the team into the depths of the playoffs, it’s been paltry.

In six seasons, he has a 52-43 regular-season record. He has taken the team to the playoffs three times: 2022, 2024, and 2025. The Chargers have been eliminated in the first game in all three circumstances.

Portnoy’s attack is more stealthy this time as his Patriots were the ones to knock out Herbert and his men from Super Bowl contention. The Chargers’ offense was reduced to nothing as the Patriots’ defense ripped apart every single one of their attempts. Herbert barely registered any yards and recorded no touchdowns. However, it was much better than the 2024 Wild Card round, which saw him being intercepted four times in a high-stakes game.
