Jannik Sinner vs. Arthur Fils: Match Preview

Jannik Sinner began the season with a semi-final finish at the Australian Open. After the Qatar Open, the Italian star experienced a career trajectory shift and has won the last three tournaments he has featured in. At the Monte Carlo Masters, he defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets to claim his first clay title in four years.

Sinner entered the Madrid Open on an unbeaten 15-match run. He almost suffered a second-round upset against Benjamin Bonzi but clawed his way back to win 6(6)-7, 6-1, 6-4. He then went on to beat Ethan Moller and Cameron Norrie without much sweat. In the quarter-finals, he ended Rafael Jodar’s run 6-2, 7-6(0) to reach the semi-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

On the other hand, Arthur Fils returned to the court in February after a back problem forced him to miss over five months. Back on the court, he wasted no time reaching his first final in over a year at the Qatar Open. He then went on to reach the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open, respectively.

He opened his clay season account at the Barcelona Open and stunned Andrey Rublev in the final to claim the championship. In Madrid, he has continued with his form. He defeated Ignacio Buse in the second round before overcoming Emilio Nava 7-6(2), 6-3. He then overcame Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 6-4 before getting his revenge against Jiri Lehecka with the same scoreline.

Jannik Sinner vs. Arthur Fils: Match Prediction

Jannik Sinner is on a 21-match winning streak, while Arthur Fils holds a nine-match winning streak. It is a tie that ensures that one of them winning runs ends before the Madrid Open final. Sinner is the favorite to win the tournament following the withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz. He has dropped just one set, and he’s yet to lose a match on clay that season.

Sinner has never won two consecutive clay titles, nor has Fils. Clay had been a difficult surface to crack for Sinner, but he has been exceptional this season. He leads Fils 1-0 in their head-to-head record, and that meeting was in the semi-finals of the 2023 Montpellier Open.

Since that meeting, both players have grown to become standout stars on the circuit. Fils is seeking to break into the top 15 by reaching the final, and Sinner aims to extend his lead as World No.1 before the French Open. Fils will need almost a miracle to beat Sinner and reach the final of the Madrid Open because of the current dominant form that Sinner has been in.

Match Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in three sets.
