Manchester United and Erik ten Hag had nowhere to hide as they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at home to rivals Tottenham Hotspur. The men in red were no match for Ange Postecoglou‘s men as they humiliated their opponents in their own backyard. Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke helped Spurs cruise to a fourth consecutive win in all competitions.
The game burst to life in the third minute when center back Micky van de Ven went on a brilliant solo effort to set up Johnson with a spectacular assist. The game then swung back and forth in the first half, with both Johnson and Alejandro Garnacho hitting the post. The crowd held their breath as an acrobatic effort from Cristian Romero went inches wide of the post.
The game took a huge turn when Bruno Fernandes was shown a straight red for a reckless tackle on James Maddison. The second half proved to be more ‘lucky’ for the visitors as they found the net in the 47th minute.
Kulusevski did well to poke the ball past Andre Onana in a heavily improvised finish from a deflected pass. The third and final goal came courtesy of Solanke, who nudged the ball in from a corner kick flicked into the penalty area by Pape Matar Sarr.
Bruno Fernandes contests being sent off, claims it was ‘never a red’
One of the biggest moments of the game came in the 42nd minute, when a lunging tackle from Bruno Fernandes reduced the Red Devils to ten men. Bereft of their captain, Manchester United were thoroughly outplayed in the second half, during which they conceded the second and third goals in the 3-0 defeat.
Following the game, Fernandes spoke to the press as he vehemently argued the referee’s decision to give him his marching orders. The United captain also stated that he wanted to appreciate his teammates for playing with a man down and the effort they put in.
Following the loss, United are now in 12th place after managing to secure just 7 points from their first six games. As for Tottenham Hotspur, they stand on the eighth place. The Red Devils play their next League game against Aston Villa away from home.
