The San Diego Padres are gearing up for their 10th appearance in the MLB playoffs. Ahead of their National League Wild Card Series opener against the Chicago Cubs, Manny Machado poked fun at a reporter for wearing the color blue in a press conference.
Blue is certainly a color the Padres are not a big fan of. One of their arch-rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, wear this color. They also happen to have their number once again.
In 13 regular-season games, the Dodgers went 8-5 against the Padres. To have another shot at them, the Padres will have to first go through another team wearing the color blue: the Cubs.
The Chicago-based side enters this postseason with Pete Crow-Armstrong leading the charge. With 45 home runs and 41 stolen bases, he became the 7th member of the 40-40 club and is the favorite to win the National League MVP Award.
Ahead of their rematch in the Wild Card Series, reporter Karthik Venkataraman brought up the success of the Cubs against the Padres from last year’s playoffs to this year. As he was about to ask a question, Machado interrupted him.
The third baseman did not seem impressed with Venkataraman’s blue jacket and asked him whether he was from San Diego. When the reporter nodded yes, the Padres star asked him why he was wearing blue.
Aren’t you from San Diego? … Why are you wearing blue?
Manny Machado asked
Venkataraman decided to play on and asked him whether he liked it or not. Machado shook his head no and said, “Obviously not.” The reporter laughed and claimed he would take it off next time. Check out the whole interaction below:

Machado also wore the color blue once in his career. Before his move to the Padres, he spent the second half of the 2018 season with the Dodgers.
He reached the World Series with them and was, unfortunately, the final out of the year. In February 2019, he signed a 10-year, $300 million deal with the Padres.
Since then, some of his comments and actions have made him a villain in the eyes of some Dodgers fans. Given the rivalry between the two teams, he has also embraced this role and has often chirped at the LA fanbase.
Manny Machado admits losing to Cubs stung last year
The San Diego Padres will have another go at the Chicago Cubs this postseason. The two teams will meet in a Wild Card Series rematch this year at Petco Park. After Manny Machado poked fun at Karthik Venkataraman, he did admit that last year’s defeat stung them.

The Padres lost the first game 3-1 before winning 3-0 in Game 2 thanks to a 2-run home run from Machado. In the elimination game, the Cubs took down the NL West side 3-1 at Wrigley Field and advanced to the National League Division Series (NLDS).
This year, the Padres will have the home-field advantage. Machado is confident that this time, things will be different for them.
It’s a new year, it’s a different year. Obviously, that stung last year for us. They played better ball than us last year. This year’s going to be a little bit different.
Manny Machado said
The Cubs did have a winning record against the Padres in the regular season. They went 5-1, with their last encounter being a huge 23-3 victory. Since that huge game where Dansby Swanson hit 3 home runs, things have changed a lot for the Padres.
They are one of the hottest teams in MLB right now, winning 17 out of their 20 games. This surge in form saw them finish 91-71 for the season.
The big question now is: can they replicate this hot form in the playoffs? The winners of this Wild Card Series will face the Milwaukee Brewers, who finished with the best record in the entire league, going 103-59 in their 162 games.
