Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes had their first singles encounter on the main roster this past Friday on SmackDown. Melo unsuccessfully challenged Williams for the United States title in a Ricky Saints-affected ending. Putting those closing shenanigans aside, Trick and Melo had one of the best WWE TV matches of the year.

It enchanted someone like Mark Henry so much so that he labeled them as the next pair of wrestlers that could mirror previous ally-turned-rival feuds like Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa, or the more acclaimed Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn dynamics. Speaking on the Busted Open Radio podcast, Henry described it as a long-brewing deal.

‘The World’s Strongest Man’ mentioned how Williams and Hayes started off as a team in NXT, where Melo was the man in charge with Trick taking notes under his tutelage. Back then, the Boston native was main-eventing the brand they were on and ‘Mr. Whoop That’ was watching and learning everything he could from Melo.

Henry alluded to Trick Williams superseding his once-mentor along the way citing the cream always rises to the top. They’re currently positioned as equals, which is a testament to Williams’ charisma that got him over with the main roster crowds in record time. Henry said that these men will now be adversaries with a hint of mutual respect.

The former AEW talent scout was blown away by the incredible match they had on SmackDown. Henry’s assessment of Williams and Hayes reminding him of how Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn‘s on-screen relationship in WWE has been over the years is a major badge of honor for the ex-Trick Melo Gang members.

The fans would surely want to see more of Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes in the near future. The latter suffered a huge setback just before this year’s WrestleMania when he lost the US title to Sami Zayn after a distraction caused by ‘Hollywood Trick’. It made Melo sit out of his second consecutive WrestleMania since getting called-up to SmackDown.

While it had the fans up in arms, WWE could use that bit to accentuate their rivalry along the lines of Hayes having a chip on his shoulder for missing out on competing at the biggest WWE event of the year due to his former ally and an even better running buddy.

Trick Williams and Lil Yachty gain internal praise in WWE

Trick Williams was called up to SmackDown in the beginning of this year and he instantly connected with the main roster audience. The 31-year-old also won the United States Championship in his WrestleMania debut match, which speaks volumes of how the company views him.

Fightful recently reported that the South Carolina native has made a strong impression in WWE internally with the kind of crowd reactions he’s been getting week in and week out. Moreover, singer-rapper Little Yachty, who’s been entrusted with managing Trick Williams, has also earned props for his full-time commitment to the role.

The fans were initially not in the favor of aligning someone as charismatic as Williams with anyone, let alone a celebrity figure. However, Yachty proved in the past couple of months that he’s indeed committed to the role and is actively making strides to excel in his spot. It’s unknown at this point what would be the endgame of Yachty’s alliance with Trick.
