Many thought a change of scenery would help Tua Tagovailoa regain his confidence. The Atlanta Falcons picked him up after he entered free agency earlier in the year.

However, Tagovailoa has become a target of ridicule. Analysts projected the former first-round draft pick to start games at quarterback while Michael Penix Jr. continued his rehab.

Poor performances in preseason quickly changed the narrative. The Falcons coaches opted to hand the ball to backup Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Starnd, rather than the more experienced Tagovailoa.

Penix recovered in time to start in week three and Falcons won a couple of games. Last week, they went toe-to-toe with the Baltimore Ravens. In overtime, Penix left the game with a rib injury, forcing the coaches to rely on Tagovailoa.

A strong twenty-yard pass on his first attempt encouraged the Falcons supporters inside Pista Mercedes-Benz Stadium. However, on the third attempt, he threw an interception straight to Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton.

Ravens DB Marlon Humphrey—who went to Alabama with Tagovailoa—revealed that Hamilton predicted Tagovailoa would throw an interception.

“Kyle was like, ‘Tua in the game.’ He was like, ‘He gonna throw me one.’ It was the most excited I’ve probably seen Kyle,” Marlon Humphrey said with a massive grin on his face on the Marlon Humphrey Show.

Tua completed 2 of 3 passes for 34 yards and one interception in his first regular-season game for the Falcons. Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley scored a one-yard rushing touchdown to secure a 30-27 victory. The Ravens are 4-1 while the Falcons are 2-3.

Tagovailoa played six seasons with the Dolphins. He posted a 44-32 regular-season record and two trips to the playoffs. In 2023, Tagovailoa led the league with 4624 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions on 388 completions.

His game started to deteriorate after suffering multiple concussions in 2024. Doctors and former players advised him to retire and focus on his family, but he returned to start in 2025. Tua went 6-8, threw 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions (only Geno Smith threw more).

At the end of the season, the Dolphins fired head coach Mike McDaniel and his staff and released Tua. He didn’t have to wait long to find a new team as New Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski signed him to a one-year, $1.215 million contract.

Falcons decide Tua Tagovailoa’s future ahead of Week 6

The Falcons stay at home for Week 6 fixture against the Chicago Bears. Both teams are coming off losses in their last games. Falcons lost in overtime against the Ravens, while the Bears got a reality check from the Green Bay Packers.

With Caleb Williams missing, the Bears started Tyson Bagent. The former undrafted star threw two interceptions before getting replaced by veteran Case Keenum. The Bears lost 31-7 to their bitter rivals.

Williams could start in Atlanta on Sunday. So, what about the Falcons? Tagovailoa is unlikely to see first-team action anytime soon, and Rush and Strand aren’t reliable starters. Incidentally, the Falcons are the only team to field four quarterbacks who have thrown interceptions.

Certainly, it is a grim outlook for Stefanski and his staff. But there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. According to Falcons reporter Zach Klein, Penix practiced on Wednesday. Afterward, Stefanski confirmed that the 26-year-old could start against the Bears.

“He’s practicing today and if everything goes according to plan…. He will start Sunday Vs Chicago,” Stefanski said via Klein.

Falcons drafted Penix 8th overall in 2024. He spent most of his rookie season backing up Kirk Cousins and started just three games, posting a 1-2 record.

In year two, the Falcons demoted Cousins to the bench in favor of Penix. He went 3-6 before Cousins took over after he suffered a season-ending knee injury. The Falcons missed the playoffs.

In the offseason, the Falcons allowed Cousins to enter free agency. Penix became the de facto starter but he opted to sit out the first two games as he’s knee wasn’t 100%.

Rush deputized for the ex-Huskie. Penix started the week three game against the Packers. He threw 18 completions for 256 yards, one touchdown, and one interception as the Falcons won 35-14.

In three starts, Penix has thrown 52 completions for 719 yards, 3 touchdowns, and one interception. Chicago leads the series 16-14. This fixture was last played in December 2023 when Chicago won 37-17.
