The Philadelphia Eagles are coming off a disappointing loss in week 2 as they served the victory to conference rivals on a silver platter, thanks to running back Saquon Barkley. Interestingly, TV host Mike Greenberg argued that if he was part of the game, he could have brought the Philly’s a victory.
Despite being wide open to catch the pass from quarterback Jalen Hurts that could have sealed the victory to Philly’s name, he dropped it, which resulted in opposing quarterback Kirk Cousins getting the ball, who wasted no time before scoring a touchdown of 70-yard. After the disastrous loss, Barkley took the entire blame upon his shoulder.
Like many who questioned the circumstances that made the two-time running back miss the catch, sports analysts on ESPN’s Get Up show asked a similar question. Host Greenberg claimed that he could have easily caught the catch if he had played for the Eagles instead of Barkley, leaving the others in the room in despair.
It absolutely should have worked. The play call worked, it fooled the defense Barkley is open as a person can be and the ball is well thrown as it can be, so it clearly should have worked. Look I never say this, but I would have caught that.Mike Greenberg said
Though losing with just one point despite dominating for almost the entire game is tough, it doesn’t define the capability of a team. It also doesn’t jeopardize the credibility of the star running back, who has only elevated the offensive power in Philadelphia.
Jalen Hurts supports Saquon Barkley amid intense scrutiny
Even though the former New York Giants superstar is facing intense scrutiny at the moment, his team hasn’t left his side. Quarterback Hurts expressed his support for Barkley despite the dropped catch in the post-game press conference, saying he would again trust the running back in such a situation.
I trust [Saquon Barkley] every day of the week to make a play, just like everybody else. We'll be better from it. It's not a matter of expectations, it's a matter of just executing what's called. And we came up short in that moment.Jalen Hurts said to the reporters
Things might have been concerning for the Eagles if Barkley hadn’t owned up to his mistake. However, he took full responsibility for the defeat and expressed his remorse for letting down his teammates. Moving forward, he has vowed to never make such a mistake in the future, while preparing for week 3’s match against the New Orleans Saints.
