Clayton Kershaw is a three-time NL Cy Young winner. Kershaw had a terrible start in a recent game that had baseball fans on the edge of their seats. It was a game that shocked the baseball community, and one guy in particular didn’t hold back.

The game was being called by legendary sportscaster Bob Costas for TBS, and he had some pointed comments to make. When Kershaw faced the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 1 of the NLDS, his evening quickly went south. Many were shocked when the Dodgers’ ace was removed after recording only one out.

The D-Backs catcher Gabriel Moreno’s three-run home ball before there was a single out was the biggest blow to Kershaw during the little time he was on the mound. Kershaw allowed a total of six runs and six hits. Bob Costas didn’t mince words when he called the home run for the Dodgers starter nothing less than “disastrous” in what was a terrible inning for Kershaw.

Costas didn’t sugarcoat the situation when Kershaw left the mound, declaring, “He’s had a hard time previously in the playoffs. The worst of all those excursions has to be this one.” In simple terms, Clayton Kershaw’s performance in that crucial inning did not meet the hopes of the Dodgers’ supporters and players.

Bob Costas’ harsh words for Clayton Kershaw

As Kershaw faced the game’s first four hitters, Bob Costas simply summarised the situation. He let up a double, then two singles in a row, and finally another double. Arizona’s Gabriel Moreno stepped up to the plate and hit with a slider, sending the ball flying over the fence for a home run. Two runners had already crossed the plate and two more were still on base.

After that, Kershaw’s evening didn’t get any better. After recording an out on a ground ball, he gave up a walk and yet another double, enabling a run to score, and was thankfully removed from the game after 35 pitches. The Dodgers were down 6-0 before they even got their first opportunity to bat.

The figures from this game’s aftermath were stark and substantial. Nobody would have predicted a pitcher of Kershaw’s ability to leave the game with an absurd ERA of 162.01. Before they ever got a chance to take their first swing at the bat, the Dodgers found themselves in an unbelievable 6-0 hole. Even the seasoned Bob Costas was shocked by the performance, calling it “the worst” he had ever seen from Kershaw in a postseason game.
