“Nobody wanted to see that fight”- Chael Sonnen reveals why Jake Paul vs. Tommy Fury was ‘the wrong way to go’

Chael Sonnen- Jake Paul

Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury was supposed to be the fight Jake proved that he could take on a professional boxer and was set to prove himself as a legitimate contender. However, Chael Sonnen wasn’t any interested in such a matchup and voiced his opinion on his YouTube channel, ‘Beyond the Fight’.

Sonnen spoke about the 65,000 PPV sales made at Jake Paul vs Tyron Woodley II and said that he expected the fight to do better than that and gave his piece on why it didn’t. But he said that pursuing a fight with Tommy Fury was the ‘wrong way to go’ and that it would actually do worse than the rematch.

It’s the wrong way to go. Nobody wanted to see that fight, and I mean nobody. Nobody, Fury didn’t want the fight. Fury said he wanted that fight, Jake said ‘great I’ll give you the fight’ and then Fury started talking about money. He did not want the fight, if you want the fight, you don’t have any money to talk about. You want to go out there and you want to compete cause this is what you do. Soon as you start talking about money, as soon as you need any kind of a carrot dangled in front of your face, you’re now showing your hand that you don’t want to do it.”

Sonnen went on to speak about the fight that no one wanted to see saying that Paul vs Fury would have ‘bombed’.

I mean in all fairness; he didn’t want to do the fight and I’m only submitting this for you because nobody wanted to see the fight in the first place. That fight was going to bomb.” He went on to say that though the viewers wanted to see Jake take on a legitimate professional boxer who is as big and inexperienced as him, Tommy had fought people with a combined record of four wins and 138 losses.

Chael Sonnen even spoke about how Fury didn’t have the confidence to take on ‘The Problem Child’ in a face-to-face press conference and he even brought back up to a virtual press conference. “Fury did not show up to the press conference to take on Jake one on one, and it was done from two different countries. He did not have the confidence to go to a press conference. This is how terrified he was of Jake Paul. He had to bring back up to the press conference including his father and his brother.”

Now with the fight canceled no one knows if the world will get to witness a Paul take on a Fury. We shall find out in the near future.
