MMA has grown exponentially due to the popularity of the UFC. Fighters with expertise in Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, and Jiu-Jitsu dominate the sport of MMA. At first, it was the BJJ fighters who held the upper hand with submission spearheaded by the Gracie family. Wrestlers soon began to dominate the game, followed by strikers with good wrestling defense. Well-rounded fighters have the upper hand in the current MMA landscape. Nonetheless, fighters with an exceptional grasp of one discipline sometimes excel in MMA.
Recently, a video of a BJJ competition went viral. In the video, a fighter with a black torso submitted his opponent, who wore a white shirt. He used an unconventional knee bar submission technique. Grapplers usually do the move by hyperextending the knees of the opponent with one’s hands. However, in the video, the grappler used his leg in a triangle lock position to lock in a knee bar. His opponent immediately tapped out due to the excruciating pain.
Even though the grappler in the video easily made the knee bar submission, it was not easy. In high-level MMA, the knee bar submission is very rare. However, there have been instances where it has happened in high-profile fights. Brock Lesnar lost his UFC debut via knee-bar to Frank Mir. UFC veteran Jim Miller, who will fight at UFC 300, has even submitted the BJJ expert Charles Oliveira with a kneebar.
Former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling also has a kneebar submission in his UFC resume. Presently, UFC lightweight Claudio Puelles is the best kneebar submission specialist in the UFC. He already has three kneebar submissions in the UFC.
Fight fans react to astonishing knee bar submission in BJJ tournament
BJJ is an integral part of MMA. Interestingly, it was the training in BJJ that brought Dana White and the Fertitta brothers into the UFC. White revealed it on his recent appearance on Vivek Ramaswamy‘s podcast. Some of the expert BJJ fighters like Charles Oliveira and Brian Ortega are among the most entertaining fighters in the UFC.
Fight fans deeply value high-level BJJ. Therefore, seeing the astonishing knee bar submission go viral on social media was not a surprise. See how the fight fans reacted to the video below.
Even though there are admirers of BJJ, there are also people and even fighters who disrespect BJJ. Wrestlers from Dagestan with a Sambo background often diminish the effectiveness of BJJ in MMA. However, some people like Craig Jones believe that BJJ is superior to Combat Sambo.
