Roxanne Modafferi is a retired MMA fighter who competed for almost twenty years. She started competing in 2003 and retired in 2022. Roxanne fought over 40 professional fights and amassed a record of 25 wins and 20 losses. The gender debate in the USA has sparked various responses from the MMA community. Modafferi took a stern stand on the debate on Twitter.
Roxanne Modafferi wrote, “I’ll go! I think consent is needed. I fought men in Jiujitsu tourneys before & everyone agreed it was exhibition, not as part of the tourney lineup. However, if I entered a National comp, I’d prefer to face only Xchrom females to win my gold. I might do exhibition but not be forced.“
Modafferi was responding to a tweet from swimmer Riley Gaines, who took a stand against transgender females (biological males) from competing in women’s sports. Gaines replied to the tweet from Modafferi. She wrote, “100% reasonable. Thank you for using your voice. So needed and inspiring to others.” The gender debate in women’s sports has gained plenty of traction recently. Fighters like Jake Shields and Sean Strickland condemn the inclusion of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Even MMA personalities like Joe Rogan have made a stand on the issue. He cited an example of swimmer Lea Thomas to indicate that transgender swimmers gain an advantage over biological female swimmers. Modafferi has now chosen to stand with Gaines, Rogan, Shields, and Strickland on this issue. The culture war in the US is at an all-time high, and more MMA fighters continue to contribute to the ongoing debate.
