MotoGP testing concluded on Tuesday with the KTM Factory team deciding to run a heavily ‘F1’ inspired aerodynamic package. KTM test rider and 2023 wildcard entry Dani Pedrosa was seen riding the KTM RC16 for the final day of testing. Notably, MotoGP pre-season testing took place between 5th and 7th of February at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.
MotoGP pre-season testing is incredibly important and can very well dictate the entire momentum of the Championship. Manufacturer’s are keen to test out new parts and developments made on the bike over the winter break. Teams often arrive at pre-season testing with new components and are anxious to test their viability.
The Spanish rider pulled out of the pits with a heavily ‘aero optimised’ bike for the final day of pre-season testing. The bike had 2 large ‘front wings’ which were decisively curved and revamped sides which were significantly more domed than before. These updates have been made in order to generate ‘ground effect’ so that the bikes do not need as much aerodynamic load on the wings to adhere to the surface. Notably, a similar philosophy has been adopted by Formula One in the recent past.

KTM have collaborated with Red Bull Advanced Technologies to produce these upgrades. Reportedly, engineers with experience in Formula One were hired for this endeavour. The adoption of new aerodynamic methods allows for an increase in top speed and increases the ability of a bike to remain connected with the track even during highly banked manoeuvres.
The pre-season tests were surely a great indicator for the season to come. With the MotoGP season set to commence in Portugal in March, teams will be motivated to improve on their bikes and start the season on the front foot. Notably, Pedrosa will be making at least one Wildcard appearance for the KTM factory team in his home Grand Prix in Spain.
