6 time MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez has been on the back foot lately. After his 4 back-to-back MotoGP titles between 2016 and 2019, Marquez’ luck seemingly ran out. The Spaniard was injured badly in the season opener in 2020 with a broken humerus. He missed the rest of the year and a number of races in 2021 and 2022 owing to his tryst with injuries.

Since his comeback, Marquez has not been able to return to form. He finished the 2021 season in 7th and 2022 in 13th in the standings, alarming results for a rider who had previously not finished below 3rd in the premiere class. During 2021, Marquez crashed 22 times in 14 races. He was soon diagnosed with Diplopia and had a 4th surgery on his humerus to correct a 30 degree rotation.

Despite his misfortune, the Spaniard won 3 races during the course of his comeback season in 2021. The riders are well aware of the risks associated with motorsports, yet they continue to compete. In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Marquez commented on the uncertainty of the duration of his rehabilitation. “Not knowing is the most difficult thing to bear; the pain too, but the pain disappears when you stop,”.

The Honda rider talked about the risks for MotoGP and expressed his desire to attack with all his might in 2023 despite still recovering.“I have learned that I don’t have to take risks in the way of facing a recovery, but I will continue to risk the same on the track, it has been seen in my last five races, in which I have been fast and I have been the one who has crashed the most times, because I wanted to go where the bike couldn’t”. he said.

Marquez expressed his aversion to playing it safe on the grid and shared his belief that hesitation will only harm his results and make competing unavailing. “I will always assume that risk, because the day I stop doing it I will start to slow down and then it will be time to go home.” the Spaniard concluded.

Marquez is excited to return to form in 2023 and re-conquer the MotoGP crown. He will be continuing with Honda until the end of 2024, after signing an unusually long 4 year deal with the marque back in 2020. Fans are hopeful and excited to see the successful pairing produce more Championship titles together. It will be interesting to see if Marquez is able to perform at pre-injury levels once again when the 2023 season gets underway in a couple months time.
