The US open will not be featuring Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. However, it seems that other than fans, there is someone else too who’d be missing them. Recently, British tennis star Andy Murray‘s coach has claimed that he wants to compete with top-ranked players.
Andy Murray’s coach, Delgado was speaking at Classic Week of the inaugural UK Pro Series, a new unique format he helped devise. It finishes in 24 of the Britains’ leading stars descending on Weybridge after five individual qualifying weeks.
Murray returns after a break
Andy Murray last completed in the Battle of Brits that was held amidst the pandemic. Clearly being an exhibition match it did not offer the Brit the intense tennis he expected. He had his surgery last year in January and has been keen on seeking an opportunity to perform. He also had to skip the Australian Open this year due to his pelvic injury.
“It’s been frustrating – it’s lingered for a while but at the end of the day, he wants to be out there competing against the best players in the world and doing what he loves. He’s still motivated and super determined. The goal is to get back competing against the top-ranked players again.” Delgado said.
Delgado made it clear that players should look out for the British player, who won a title last year beating the Swiss player, Stanlias Wawrinka at the Europen Open in October.
“His team is behind Andy, that’s what we were working hard for. The previous season’s closing stages were great after winning the title in Antwerp, and we hope to get back out there, looking forward to competing again. Andy is a former world no. 1 and he could have won more titles without those injuries, although that’s not easy to predict. He would have been in contention for Majors.” Delgado further stated.
Looking forward at the US Open
Andy Murray has made it to the main draw and will not have to play the qualifying rounds to enter the US Open. The draw is yet to be declared, but Murray will try to keep his best foot forward.
Adding to this, Jamie Delgado said,
“The US Open is going to be very different and unique; it should be fun to see how it all works. Andy hasn’t played that many matches in recent months, and we are looking forward to getting out there and compete again; that’s the priority at the moment,”
The US Open will begin on 31st August and will be played without any spectators. Andy Murray won his first US Open title in 2012 against Novak Djokovic.
