The NASCAR Cup Series Playoff Round of 12 opener saw Trackhouse Racing’s Ross Chastain playing the spoiler by securing his maiden win of the 2024 season. He was able secure the victory due to the bad luck of Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin, whose race was derailed by multiple mistakes from his crew in the pit-road.

Denny Hamlin secured a P8 finish at the end of the day despite coming out outside the top 15 over poor pit-stops He didn’t hesitate to call out his crew, that had a history making mistake before they made huge progress in the Next-Gen establishing themselves as among the best, reminding them it was one of the worst days ever they have had in the sport.

They know that today was one of their worst days ever. They’ll just go work to clean it up. I don’t know, I’ve had some pretty bad days, but just yeah, horrible day. Came out 15th, 20th, then we had a loose wheel. Just terrible. Terrible day.

Denny Hamlin said after the race.

He doubled down on the criticism later highlighting how because of the crappy day on the pit-road, he didn’t get the finish he deserved and has to settle for just a 11-points advantage going into next race instead of a better one. It was a great missed opportunity for them lock into the Round of 8 in the post-season.

It was just a crappy day on pit road, and we didn’t get the finish that we deserved. This is a great opportunity to lock ourselves in and instead we’re scraping and clawing to finish in the top 10.

Denny Hamlin said in a separate interview.

Denny Hamlin claims he should have won the race

The 23XI Racing co-owner while further discussing the topic, pointed out that he should have won the trace if not for the poor re-start positions as they had the fastest car. He just ran out of laps, after getting trapped in the mid-field most of the race slowly making progress.

We should have won the race. We had the fastest car, but every time we get to the top three the caution comes out and we restart 15th, 20th. Can’t show how fast your car is when you’re back of the pack. All you can do is just keep making positions back up to the front over and over and over and eventually you just run out of laps and someone else wins.

Denny Hamlin said.

The Joe Gibbs Racing veteran has missed a great opportunity, but should move on from it, as there are two more critical races left for the next round. It will be interesting to see how the championship battle playout for the veteran racer.
