The 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season so far hasn’t been kind to Team Penske Racing veteran Joey Logano. He is currently P15 in the table with an average finish of 19.4 with just two top-5s. Coming to Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, he was hoping to bank on some luck. He initially had lady luck on side, as he survives a close call early in the race when William Byron spun out.
But the positivity didn’t last, as he was involved in pit-stop drama. He found himself in the middle of traffic when he was getting out of his pit-box after changing two tires. As he was coming out, Cole Custer, who was coming into put, made a sudden stop in order to avoid making contact with Ty Gibbs ahead of him.
Everyone was trying to get two tires and the whole field is passing you because the pit stops are so fast with two tires
Joey Logano said after getting released from infield care center (as reported via motorpsort.com).
The No:22 Penske Ford Mustang slammed into the back of the No:41 Haas Factory Team Chevy, causing massive damages to both the cars. Joey Logano admitted that he had nowhere to go and nothing to do amidst the drama and added that he didn’t have the time or space to hit the brake to avoid the incident.
They checked up in front of me and stopped. You’re trying to look, you’re trying to get up out of the way. And they just stopped. There was nothing I could do. I couldn’t stop in time. It’s been a tough year, to say the least.
Joey Logano added.
Cole Custer shared his thoughts on the Joey Logano crash
On his post-race media session, Chevy driver Cole Custer recalled what went wrong on the pit-road. He pointed out that he found himself in the tough spot and didn’t want to ruin Ty Gibbs’ day, as the JGR driver was having a strong day. Hence, he made a sudden stop resulting in the crash.

Just a really tough spot, you know. Everybody’s probably taking two tires or fuel only on that stop, and I tried to give way to the 54, but it’s just a narrow pit road. Somebody ran in the back of us and I hit it wherever it was, I guess. It’s just a tough spot. (Yeah, it was Logano.)
Cole Custer said.

Furthermore, he pointed out that he made the right call by slowing down for the No:54 driver, but would have loved to not interfere the days of his rivals pitting behind him. It was a situation where there was no clear way out without triggering an incident.
Yeah, I mean, you’re still going whatever it is, 50 miles an hour, so it’s going to be a hit. But yeah, I’ll have to see a replay of it—I haven’t seen it yet…Yeah, it was a really tough spot. I feel like if I dove it off in there, I probably hit the 54, and he’s running up there—I don’t want to ruin his day. But then I have to slow down so much that I’m in the way for everybody else. So, it’s just… I don’t know, it’s a tough spot to be in.
Cole Custer added.
He duo wasn’t the only ones to have a clash on pit-road. Later Chase Briscoe and Kyle Larson made contact with the No:19 Toyota was coming out and No:5 Chevy came in. It ruined the momentum for their race as it did with Custer and Logano.
