The NASCAR Cup Series race last weekend at Michigan International Speedway marked another impressive victory from Denny Hamlin. He became the wingiest driver in Joe Gibbs Racing history with the 57th career triumph and become the only the 10th racer to win a Cup racer after 700th start. This has inspired ex-racer Kyle Petty to make a bold prediction.
Discussing Denny Hamlin’s performance for NASCAR’s YouTube channel, Kyle Petty highlighted how elite the nine other drivers are that has won after 700th start is, a list that include his father, Richard Petty, who has 200 Cup wins. Everyone there are hall of famer, except Kevin Harvick who is not eligible for the honor yet.
Denny Hamlin includes Bobby Allison, Bill Elliott, Richard Petty, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon. This is an elite group. All of these guys, all but Kevin Harvick and Kevin Harvick will be there, are all in the Hall of Fame. That’s how elite this group is.
Kyle Petty said via NASCAR’s YouTube channel.
The only driver that is set to join them is Kyle Busch, who crossed the 700-race mark in 2024, but hasn’t won yet. He, just like Kevin Harvick is going to a first ballot hall of famer owing to his dominance in all three national series and the two Cup championship he won, with Hamlin as his teammate.
He then made a bold prediction, as Denny Hamlin is closing in on 60th career win. He believes the veteran is going to the last to reach this mark, and though there are drivers such as Joey Logano and Kyle Larson, none of them are capable of crossing the mark as of the moment. The sports have evolved so much over the years to give drivers that opportunity.
But I think we’re seeing something that we will never see again in this sport. I’m just going to be definitive about it, Denny Hamlin’s going to get to 60 Cup wins. Don’t think we’re going to see another driver do it. I know everyone wants to talk Joey Logano. I know everybody wants to Kyle Larson, and there may be somebody that comes along years from now that gets close.
Kyle Petty added.
Why Kyle Petty feels 60 is going to be an unreachable number?
Further talking about the point, Petty admitted that just like his father’s 200 race win and David Pearson’s 105 wins, the 60 mark will become the new magical number. This is because of the changes the sports have gone through over the years with cars as well as competitive drivers.

Sixty is a magical number. It’s the 200 of Richard Petty. It’s the 105 for David Pearson. That magical number that nobody else will attain. I say that because the sport has changed so much.
Kyle Petty said.
Hamlin has able secure this many wins, because he was one of the few drivers that rode on the same level when the change happened. Petty believes even the veteran knows it’s a special number and that why he mentioned that on his press conference.
Denny Hamlin has rode that sport change. He’s rode from the old cars to the new cars, and he’s won in everything he’s sat in. He said it in his press conference that he’s chasing a number. He knows that 60 is a magic number, knows it’s something special and he wants to grab it.
Kyle Petty added.
It is a highest point of compliment for Hamlin, considering the fact that when they were arcing together Petty had huge beef with the JGR driver. It would be interesting to see if any driver will come and prove Petty’s prediction wrong, but it is sure that the driver has to be a multi-generational talent.
