Richard Petty is spearheading a new wave of change in the NASCAR cup garage with Legacy Motor Club, formerly known as Petty GMS Racing. The RCR-supported Chevy team is chasing a return to its glory days with Maurice Gallagher and new co-owner Jimmie Johnson at the helm. Though the LA clash will mark the season opener, all eyes are on the official season opener, the Daytona 500.

The Great American race will Mark the official cup return of Jimmie Johnson, who joined petty as Legacy M.C. co-owner. He will drive part-time in the series in the No:84 entry, starting from Daytona teaming up with Erik Jones and rookie Noah Gregson. NASCAR recently asked fans to pick a winner for the 2023 Daytona 500, and Petty chose Erik Jones over fellow seven times Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson and Gregson.

There are several reason Petty have picked Jones over the other two. Erik Jones is the only one among the 3 who has a realistic chance of winning, considering his recent Cup performances. Johnson has a slim chance of winning since he hasn’t raced in the series in two years, and with all due respect to his legacy, it’s a long shot.

Noah Gregson has a bit more chance, and the fact that Austin Cindric won the event last year in his rookie season backs the claims. But Erick Jones’s Superspeedway expertise can not be overlooked. Petty’s pick also comes from his bias with the No:43 team, after all, the No:43 screams Richard Petty when it is sported on any Stock Racing track.

Legacy M.C. reacted to its boss’s choice via its official Twitter handle. The admin acknowledged that No:43 is a solid choice and joked that Jimmie Johnson and Noah Gregson are on the phone to speak with him. “Very solid choice, gotta go with the driver of the No. 43 can’t argue with that! Btw RP I’ve got Noah and JJ on the phone asking for you, no idea what this could be about,”.

But fans decided to side with Petty as they pointed out that  “King’s decree” cannot be challenged.  Some pointed out that Noah Gregson is a challenger for the win, and it was surprising to see that few came in support of Jimmie Johnson in his return.
