Kyle Larson and Max Verstappen
The reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion has one more accolade to add to his trophy cabinet as the Californian native was bestowed the 2022 Driver of the year award in ESPYS. Kyle Larson became the 19th NASCAR driver to have won the award, following his incredible 2021 cup series-winning run, defeating the likes of F1 world champion Max Verstappen, IndyCar series champion Alex Palou, and NHRA champion, Steve Torrence.
Kyle Larson dominated the 2021 season, which was also his debut season for Hendrick Motorsports, as he drove the No:5 HMS Chevy Camaro ZL1 to the victory lane 10 times along with the All-Star Race win which he capped off with securing HMS’s 14th cup series championship. The HMS team has won nine ESPYS Best Driver awards as NASCAR legends Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon have won it four times each for the team.
The event was hosted by NBA superstar Steph Curry, who was awarded the best NBA player and record-breaking performance, and honored Athletes such as Shohei Ohtani, Aaron Rodgers, Charles Oliveira, Kylian Mbappé, Tyson Fury, Rafael Nadal, and Emma Raducanu for the impressive performances they have produced in their respective sporting events.
Kyle Larson has kept his 2021 form running in the 2022 season in the Next-Gen cars through his championship table position doesn’t reflect it well though as he has been part of some of the most unfortunate incidents that cost him wins and top finishes. The No:5 car driver secured the playoff spot in the second race of the season at Fontana, and though he remains winless after that he has everything in him and with him to go for the consecutive championship this season.
“Salty Max fans should actually go watch some Kyle Larson racing” NASCAR Twitter reacts to Kyle Larson’s win

NASCAR Twitter was obviously overwhelmed by the honor given to Kyle Larson considering the fact they were the major voters who helped Kyle to secure the award. The debates among fans about why Kyle Larson deserved the award more than fellow nominee Max Verstappen, who also won his first F1 championship last year topping 7 times world champion Lewis Hamilton, was also a hot topic.
