‘I hit a tire on pit road,’ Ross Chastain claims a hit with the tire cost him a top-five finish at Kansas

Ross Chastain and Trackhouse racing were the revelation of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Season as the young team secured two wins this season making them only the third team to secure multiple wins with Next-Gen cars, the others being Joe Gibbs Racing with two wins, Team Penske also with two wins alongside Hendrick Motorsport with five wins to their name.

Ross Chastain has been having a consistent season so far as he has finished inside the Top 10 nine times this season which includes two wins and six top 5 finishes alongside a solo P7 finish which came this weekend at Kansas Speedway as he failed to maintain a constant speed to get into top five.

Just like his teammate Mexican Daniel Suarez, Chastain was also unlucky in the race as a bunch of pit stop issues such as an engaged lug nut and a hit with a tire cast him the top-five finish he deserved at the 1.5-mile track. Now the COTA and Talladega winner has come forth expressing his thoughts on what might have cost him a Top five finish at the track.

Ross Chastain acknowledged that they had a pretty good start to the race and was sure that they will be able to finish in the top 10 without any doubt. He went on to say that they had a scare in the first stage owing to a lug nut engaged on the left rear during the green flag stop in stage two, but they were able to get back with the top 10 then.

We started off pretty good and pretty early on in the race, we realized we were capable of a top-10 car. The first stage was good. We had a lug nut not get engaged on the left rear during the green flag stop in stage two, which we got lucky to even get it back on. We were able to cycle back around to about where we should have been, so that was fortunate,” Ross Chastain said.

Ross Chastain went on to explain what happened in the race saying they had an up and down race later that as he has both restarted the race at the front as well as at the back. He went on to reveal that he hit a tire on the pit road which dented his car’s left fender making him too tight to fight for the top 5 even though they had a really fast car.

From there, there was just a lot of ups and downs. We would restart upfront and then we’d restart in the back; and I can’t even remember what all happened exactly. We had a lot of speed in our No. 1 Advent Health Chevy Camaro. It’s cool to be that fast. I hit a tire on pit road late and that dented in the left front fender; and that ultimately made us too tight to fight for a top-five,” Ross Chastain added.
