The Chevy garage has lost one of its famous teams going into the 2024 season to Toyota. Legacy Motor Club, co-owned by Richard Petty, Jimmie Johnson, and Moury Gallagher, has joined TRD and will field the Toyota Camry from the 2024 season. This will increase their stretches from five cars to seven next season.
While it isn’t a major loss for the team if performance is considered as Legacy MC, previously, Petty GMS Racing has been a midfield team in the last decades, and in 2023, they were among the backmarkers. But losing two seven-time champions to their direct rivals and letting Jimmie Johnson drive for Toyota is a massive loss for them.
But General Motors won’t be concerned about it much since they have the stars of Henrick Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing, and Trackhouse Racing under them. This availability is one of the main reasons Legacy MC left them, as according to the team CEO Cal Wells III’s claims, they didn’t get the tier-1 treatment they wanted with over-subscribed Chevy already having many top-tier teams.
If you take technology, as you expand that circle of trust, you inadvertently share incremental technologies and you can lose the tight reign around it that you want. So, as you add another team and another team or another team, NDAs are great, but it becomes a real challenge for folks like Chevrolet that are already oversubscribed. In other words, they have a plethora of tier-one teams. So, just from their seat on the bus, it really didn't make any sense.Cal Wells III told Autoweek.
Which is the Chevy team in the NASCAR Cup garage?
Eight full-time Cup series teams in the garage field full-time cars. They field a combined 15 cars in the series. Six Chevy cars were run in selected races in the 2023 season, including Legacy MC’s No:85 Camaro driven by Jimmie Johnson.
Hendrick Motorsports is the premier team in the garage with four drivers, including ex-champions Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson. Richard Childress Racing is the second-best team under the umbrella. The field has two cars with a driver line-up with former champion Kyle Busch.
Trackhouse Racing is the third team in the hierarchy, and they have two of the most beloved racers, Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez. 2023 Daytona 500 winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s JTG Daugherty Racing, Kaulig Racing, Live Fast Motorsports, and Spire Motorsports also field Chevy cars.
