Phoenix season finale “is not just another race,” for Joey Logano
Joey Logano
Joey Logano was the first driver to secure the championship entry this season. He won the Round of 8 opener at Las Vegas and scored a top-20 finish at Homestead and top 10 at Martinsville. He is the only veteran fighting for the title this year at the finale.
The No:22 Team Penske racing driver missed out on the championship in 2020 after finishing P3 at the end, losing the title to HMS’s Chase Elliott. He can have his revenge on Elliott as the former champion will line up alongside Christopher Bell and Ross Chastain in the Championship 4 race.
Unlike many drivers, Logano doesn’t have a “just another race” attitude to the finale. He pointed out that the race for the championship is more significant than any other race of the season.
“It’s not another race. I like how people do that and say it’s just another race; that is just a way to minimize the situation that you can’t truly honestly believe. Because it’s not, it’s racing for a championship. It’s bigger than any other race. It absolutely is,” Joey Logano said.
Joey Logano has the edge over his competitors at the Phoenix
Joey Logano pointed out that having gone through the season finale more than once, he has learned how to handle the pressure in such situations. This gives him an edge over the other three cup chasers on Sunday.
“So you have to learn to handle that pressure, and the only way to know how to do that is by going through it multiple times. I feel like that’s what gives my whole race team and me a clear advantage going into this race, on top of some of the other things we already know,” said Joey Logano.
Joey Logano compared the Phoenix race at the start of the season to the upcoming one and pointed out that the cars and drivers have evolved a lot since. He said, “You think about Phoenix (race) 1 was so long ago; it was the beginning of the year, we were really learning a lot about our cars, and we’ve evolved a lot from there,”.
Joey Logano is the sole Ford driver left in the playoff. The Penske garage hopes to secure a second cup champion’s hip with their veteran driver on board. Logano showed consistency and expertise since the start of the season, unlike most veterans who struggled to cope with the Next-Gen cars. Logano is one of the front runners for the cup win. He hopes to secure the cup win he missed in Phoenix in 2020.
