Martin Truex Jr., who was winless in the 2022 Cup season, has scored his first win of the 2023 season as he won the unofficial season opener, the LA Clash at the Colosseum. Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch of Richard Childress Racing finished P2 and P3. The race turned out to be a complete mess as 16 cautions were shown, with the majority coming in the final half of the race.

The win marked the 7th Busch light clash win for TRD and the first-ever clash win for the veteran. In his post-race interview, Truex Jr. pointed out that he is pleased to return to victory lane after a disappointing 2022 season. The win will boost the No:19 driver and might even force him to rethink his retirement plans.

The experience teams and drivers gained last year changed the whole dynamic of the race as it became more physical. Kyle Busch, Bubba Wallace, and Ryan Preece are the drivers who impressed the most in LA. Busch secured the P3 after spinning midway through the race. Wallace led 39 laps of the race but finished P22 after Austin Dillon sent him to the wall with just 10 laps left in the race. Preece, who is making his Cyup return with SHR, led the most laps in the race.

All three podium finishers were awarded the medals, and Truex was awarded the trophy in the post-race ceremony. The medals were specially made for the event as part of the latest changes introduced by Ben Kennedy to the sport. Truex deserved to win the race as he was the fastest car on the weekend. Though the race is not point paying it is the best start he could hope for after going through his first winless season since 2014 in 2022.

In case you missed it: Denny Hamlin doesn’t seem 100% sold on the idea that Bubba Wallace will secure 2023 Cup playoff spot
