Kyle Busch win at Fontana
Kyle Busch scored his first-ever Cup win in the No:8 RCR Chevy Camaro ZL1. He won the final race at the Auto Club Speedway’s current configuration after being sent back to the grid for speeding in the pitlane. With practice and qualifiers being scrapped due to rain, the Pala Casino 400 was the first arcing action witnessed by fans this weekend.
The win also secures Busch the record for consecutive seasons with at least a race win. He tied with Richard Petty last with his win at Bristol. Busch has now scored a Cup win in 19 consecutive Cup seasons. The race was about the pure class of Busch as he was able to outrace youngsters Ross Chastain and Chase Elliott towards the end of the race to score the win.
The No:1 Trackhouse Racing driver led race-high laps and won the first two stages. Busch chased him down with just 34 laps left in the race. After employing a different pit-strategy saw, Busch could take the lead with just 21 laps left. The no:8 Chevy kept the lead to himself for the win while Chastain failed to out-race the No:9 HMS car, which resulted in the 2022 Regular season scoring P2.
“Coulda, woulda, shoulda last week, right?. I think it’s just phenomenal. I can’t thank Richard and Judy (Childress) enough. I can’t thank Austin (Dillon) for calling me and getting me talking and getting me this opportunity to come over here to RCR and be a part of Chevrolet, and be able to race this Lucas Oil Camaro today and be able to put it up front like that,” Busch said after the win.
“The guys did a great job. Randall (Burnett, crew chief), everybody that has worked so hard during the offseason. We’ve done a lot of sim stuff. We’ve done a lot of testing in general, just trying to get up to speed. Man, there is nothing more rewarding than being able to go to victory lane. I need some 3CHI for my hands; I death-gripped that wheel throughout the second half of that race. But we held on. We got it today,” Busch added.
