Ricky Stenhouse Jr. produced the most prestigious moment of his Cup career at Daytona International Speedway, winning the longest Daytona 500 in history. The 3ed career Cup win of the JTGR driver’s career was even more special as it came in the first Cup race of the 75th Anniversary edition of NASCAR.
The No:47 Chevy driver edged defending Cup Champion Joey Logano and JGR youngster Christopher Bell in the double overtime showdown. The trio got into the front row after a dramatic crash during the first overtime that took out Kyle Busch and his teammate Austin Dillon. Busch’s 19-year-long pursuit of the great American race wins continues.
The second overtime saw Stenhouse and Logano having the neck-to-neck battle before Bell squeezed in, making the fight three wide. The Chevy took the white flag. He was awarded the win after the 2021 Cup champion Kyle Larson crash brought in the night’s final caution. The win is a testament to the driver and his team’s persistence, as they were consistent throughout the night, and fortune favored the brave at the end.
“Yeah, I think this whole off-season Mike just preached how much we all believed in each other. They left me a note in the car that said they believed in me and to go get the job done tonight. I made a few mistakes. We were able to battle back,” Stenhouse Jr. said in his post-race interview.
“This Kroger Continental team worked really, really hard in the off-season, great pit stops, Hendrick engines. Glad a Chevy won. Man, this is unbelievable. This was the site of my last win back in 2017. We’ve worked really hard. We had a couple shots last year to get a win and fell short. It was a tough season, but, man, we got it done. DAYTONA 500!” Stenhouse Jr. added.
