The 2024 NASCAR Cup season witnessed some controversial moments and legendary team Richard Childress Racing was in the middle of it. They were involved in two major events, that resulted in them losing millions in revenue. This, coupled with the below average cars their team fielded resulted in them ending the season with a single win.
RCR veteran Austin Dillon was at the center of both these events, with the first one coming at Richmond Raceway. He won the race by wrecking the race leaders and it resulted in him getting DQed from the playoff, costing them the multi-million bonus they would have gotten for the last-16 entry. The second incident was the race manipulation saga from Martinsville playoff race
Dillon and Ross Chastain were instructed by Chevy to set up a blockade to help William Byron win the race. This resulted in a $200,000 fine, that yet again reduced their revenue. Recently in his appearance in the Dale Jr. Download podcast, he admitted that the lost over $3 million due to these two incidents and it really stings.
Richard Childress puts some blame on NASCAR over the drama
During the same conversation, Childress highlighted how it was Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin who were involved in the incident, and how they used their power to entice NASCAR into ruling against RCR. He seems really disappointed about the outcome of the two penalty rulings.
The comments from Richard Childress shows he really felt wronged about the NASCAR’s decision to penalize his team in the two situations. It would be interesting to see how RCR is going to get over the drama and perform on a high level in 2025.
