The Dallas Mavericks have now officially had one of their most disappointing seasons in recent memory. After their 115-112 loss to the Chicago Bulls on Friday night, they are now officially out of playoff contention. Criticism poured in from all directions in the aftermath of the loss, with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving at the center of social media’s vitriol.
Doncic and Irving’s partnership was expected to propel the Mavericks into the upper echelon in the West, but the trade to land the former Brooklyn Nets star has so far had the opposite effect.
The Mavericks’ main opponents for a play-in berth were the Oklahoma City Thunder. The scenario for qualification was such that Dallas had to win two more than the Thunder to usurp them for 10th place in the Western Conference standings. This equation was set ahead of their games with Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, and San Antonio Spurs.
While the Mavs started well by clinching a win against the Kings, they fell short against the Bulls. With Kyrie Irving sitting out against the Chicago Bulls, the task was entirely on Doncic to pick up a win for the team. However, the Mavericks had seemingly made up their mind about giving up on the season. They benched their superstar guard a minute into the second quarter and blew a 13-point halftime lead to lose by three.
Twitter FLAMES Luka Doncic and the Mavericks after loss against the Bulls
Fans on Twitter, unsurprising, weren’t kind to the Mavericks after their elimination from playoff contention. Not many seem to be having any remorse for the franchise or its players, especially Doncic. Below are some of the most vicious comments that poured in:
The Mavericks have a long offseason in store. The team’s priority is to tie down Kyrie Irving to a long-term deal and then build a roster around the star guard and Doncic. Dallas will be hoping to land a top-10 pick in the draft to help improve their roster. The arduous journey of building a team capable of contending in the Western Conference has already begun for owner Mark Cuban and his front office.
