The US government exchanged the 2014 WNBA Champion for notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout also known as “The Merchant of Death”, who was held in an American prison for 12 years. Brittney Griner and Viktor Bout were exchanged to each of the respective parties at Abu Dhabi Airport. The respective parties from two countries swapped their respective citizens as they walked to the planes. Bout was received by his wife and mother with flowers and long hugs.

Since the news of her release, “Brittney hates America” has been trending all over the news, alluding to an incident in 2020 when Griner refused to pay her respect to the national flag during a WNBA game. Divided in opinion some have also expressed their frustration and disappointment against the US government for not including or solely dealing for former Marine, Paul Whelan in exchange for Viktor Bout.
