“Most mild ejection I’ve ever seen,” Celtics fans in disbelief as Grant Williams gets ejected for punching the ball into the crowd

Grant Williams ejected

Grant Williams, the Boston Celtics power forward was ejected last night in the Celtics’ loss to the Golden State Warriors. Williams’ ejection came as a surprise to fans as it did appear harmless to many. His ejection came in the last minutes of the game.

With less than two minutes left in the game, Stephen Curry launched a 3-point shot after the timeout whistle was blown. As the ball hit the backboard and came back towards Grant, a disappointed Williams punched the ball hard.

Scott Foster immediately blew the whistle and Grant Williams was out of the ball game. Grant seemed surprised by the call as he didn’t realize such actions would mean an automatic ejection of the players. As usual Mike Breen referred to ESPN rules analyst and former NBA referee Steve Javie about the refs’ call, Javie said “when the ball enters the stands with force like that it’s an automatic ejection.”

This was the second ejection for the Celtics star within 2 months. Williams was first ejected during the Celtics vs Chicago Bulls game in late October for bumping intentionally into game official Cheryl Flores. Later, after the game, the NBA suspended him for one game for displaying bad sportsmanship.

The Celtics were facing the defending champions after their Game-6 loss in the NBA Finals earlier this year. Since last year Boston has exponentially bettered their game on both sides of the floor. They remain the top team in the league.

However, the Warriors played one of their best games of the season against Tatum and the Celtics and beat them 123-107. Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson came and combined for 66 of the Warriors’ 123 points. Thompson and Curry scored 34 and 32 respectively.

From the Celtics roster, the 2022-23 MVP candidate Tatum scored only 18 points shooting less than 30% from the field. Jaylen Brown scored team-high 31 points. Before being ejected from the game Grant Williams scored 11 points in the loss.
