“The wheels could fall off” – Damian Lillard trade can END Giannis Antetokounmpo’s time with Bucks, claims NBA insider
Despite trading for Damian Lillard, an NBA Insider predicts that the Milwaukee Bucks could still potentially lose Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Damian Lillard to Milwaukee
The Milwaukee Bucks have made an all-in move to acquire Damian Lillard and pair him with their franchise player, Giannis Antetokounmpo. They traded away multiple assets solely to ensure that he signs his extension due in the summer of 2024. This move aims to secure Giannis’s commitment, but there’s uncertainty about how things might unfold.
According to NBA Insider Bobby Marks, until Giannis signs that extension next summer, his future in Milwaukee remains uncertain. Marks predicts that if Damian Lillard gets injured or if the new coach, Adrian Griffin, doesn’t mesh well with Giannis next season, he may contemplate leaving the Bucks in search of a situation better suited for winning a championship.
Marks stated, “The wheels could fall off in Milwaukee. Giannis could assess the situation like this: ‘We traded Jrue. Damian got hurt. Khris isn’t the player he once was. I don’t enjoy playing for Griffin.’ Many variables could come into play until he signs on the dotted line.”
Giannis Antetokounmpo hasn’t committed future to the Bucks even after Damian Lillard trade
Giannis might still leave the Milwaukee Bucks following the Damian Lillard trade this offseason. According to senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Bucks didn’t ask Giannis to commit to the franchise for a long time if they traded for Lillard in exchange for Jrue Holiday.
According to Woj, despite the Bucks trading for Lillard, Giannis hasn’t confirmed his future with the franchise. He hasn’t expressed excitement about signing a new extension or informed the franchise if he is considering other teams. Woj also mentioned that the franchise hasn’t pressured their star to disclose his decision regarding the extension
The Bucks are hopeful that their franchise player will sign a max extension, which would allow them to acquire significant assets if he ever requests a trade. If Giannis decides to stay with the franchise, they could have a player like Kobe Bryant, who consistently makes them contenders every season he plays
