Something happened in July of 2010 that changed the NBA world forever. That was, of course, the Big 3 of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh collaborating in Miami, which would permanently change the path of NBA history. It was a watershed moment that started the Heat on the way to dominance, and while it didn’t continue as long as everyone expected, they still went down as one of the finest teams ever.

It was widely assumed that the collaboration had been planned for years, but Dwyane Wade disproved that assumption in a recent edition of the “Point Forward” podcast. When questioned when the notion of teaming up came about, Wade remarked that he never saw himself working with LeBron until the free agency period.

The Big 3 consisting of Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh are widely regarded as the start of the super team era. They were unstoppable and brought two titles to South Beach. Following Wade’s re-signing following the 2009-10 season, the Heat signed both Bosh and James in free agency, with the latter being announced in the television special The Decision.

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are among the best basketball duos of all time. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade were instrumental in the team’s triumph. Despite having championship ambitions before their debut season, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade were defeated in the NBA Finals. King James possibly suffered his worst series of his career. His performances were highly critiqued by the media.

Dwayne Wade recounts playing in the Big 3 and how he didn’t expect to be paired up with Lebron – “I never thought we was going to play together. Like it never crossed my mind. Playing in the All-Star games and playing in the summer games and playing in the Olympics, that’s one thing, but playing the NBA season together that’s 82, that’s way different. You know how hard that is to think about playing with another ball-dominated guy. It wasn’t as many shots as it is now, the pace wasn’t the same as it is now, so it looked even harder to even think that.”

“So it was nothing that was on my mind until free agency in 2010, when we started going through the process of free agency, there was nothing on my mind until then about even playing together. A lot of people think we came up with it, I wish we were this smart. Like, we go with this plan like we’re building it from 2004 to 2008, but we weren’t that smart.”

The three led the Heat to the NBA Finals in all four of their seasons together, winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. After losing in the NBA Finals the following season to the San Antonio Spurs, James declined a contract extension and returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Both Wade and Bosh remained with the Heat for two more seasons following James’ departure, when Wade left for the Chicago Bulls and Bosh retired due to medical reasons. Wade signed a one-year contract with the Cavaliers on September 27, 2017, reuniting him alongside James. The Cavaliers transferred Wade back to the Miami Heat on February 8, 2018, at the NBA trade deadline, in return for a protected 2024 second-round draft selection. Wade declared his intention to retire from the NBA after the 2018-19 season on September 16, 2018, while Chris Bosh formally confirmed his retirement on February 12, 2019 at his Miami Heat jersey retirement ceremony.
