Within two weeks, everything about the Phoenix Suns has changed. Former Suns’ owner, Robert Sarver, did something that surprised many employees in the organization. According to Baxter Holmes from ESPN, Sarver donated a large sum of money to the team’s charity before handing the keys to Mat Ishbia. Furthermore, he also gave large bonuses to some of his employees.
The ESPN reporter wrote that Sarver had donated $5 million to the team’s charity and also gave as much as a $20,000 bonus to some of the employees in the organization. “Former Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver is giving a $20,000 individual bonus to many team employees and is also donating $5 million to the team’s charity, sources told ESPN on Thursday,” Holmes wrote.
Sarver had a poor reputation among his staff due to allegations of sexism and racism. His action might be a final gesture before leaving the team. “I will say, what a classy way to move on,” said one of the Phoenix Suns’ employees. Mat Ishbia, the new team owner, bought 57 percent of the team’s stake for $2.28 billion when the team’s overall value was estimated to be around $4 billion.
Mat Isbhia finally takes over Phoenix Suns from Rober Sarver
Last Wednesday, Robert Sarver turned over control of the Suns to new owner Mat Ishbia. With Ishbia in charge, the team will want to go on and win a championship with their new superstar, Kevin Durant. “We’re going to win together, we’re going to lose together, as a team, and we’re going to be a family,” Ishbia spoke to his employees. “We’re going to take care of each other…care about each other,” the new owner remarked. Sarver had personally sold 37 percent of his stakes to Ishbia for a total of $1.48 billion.
He is aware of the allegations of sexism and racism leveled against his predecessor, so maintaining staff faith becomes critical. He addressed the workforce and stated that he wanted the company to be the best it could be for his employees.
“The team-member experience is everything,” Ishbia told employees. “I want to make this the best place to work. I want to get great people to join…It’s all about people. People is everything. That’s the most important thing. Without great people, without people that care, you’ve got nothing. So we’re going to start with culture and team.” With a nearly new squad on the court and a new owner, perhaps it is a new beginning for the Suns.
