The salary gap between top-paid WNBA players and the NBA mascot was one of the biggest surprises that came on the internet recently. Equal pay between male and female athletes has been in the conversation for over a decade now. From the national teams to the professional teams in various sports leagues speaking against unequal pay to other athletes, men and women have spoken openly against the pay gap in sports.
But the latest news that perhaps became the latest highlight of the gender pay gap was the salary gap between the highest-paid WNBA player and the Denver Nuggets Mascot. Jewell Loyd is the highest-paid basketball player from WNBA and Rocky the Mountain Lion is the highest-paid mascot in the NBA for the Denver Nuggets. Rocky is perhaps the funniest mascot in the league and can be seen messing around with NBA players from the opposing team.
It is perhaps unlikely to even think that mascots would be paid more than athletes in the game. However, the surprising number in the difference between both is as surprising as one can imagine. Jewell Loyd is the highest-paid WNBA player for the Seattle Storm has a salary of $234k, whereas, Rocky the Mountain, the mascot for Denver Nugget gets paid $625k in the salary. Rocky the Mountain is the highest-paid mascot in the NBA.

The mascots in the league play an important role for any team and area for in-game entertainment. From tossing t-shirts, jumping on the trampoline, making half-court blind baskets, and flirting with ladies on the seats, they can provide a multitude of entertainment to the fans. These mascots are people putting on costumes to entertain people and more or so are the richest entertainers in the entertainment industry to earn by wearing a mask.

However, the question of the pay gap between male and female athletes remains still alive. There have been narratives and arguments that athletes are paid on the basis of the money they bring because it is all business. On this Las Vegas Aces’ all-star guard, Kelsey Plum had the perfect answer. Clarifying the stance she said, “We’re not asking to get paid what the men get paid, We’re asking to get paid the same percentage of revenue shared.”
